TP-Link WDR4900 + Huawei EC 178 (EV-DO / CMDA) modem problem

Modem detects fine, switches fine. The router gets WAN IP and brings up wwan0 interface for 10-15 minutes but during this window, there is no internet access on clients and then finally the WAN ip addresses completely vanish from WAN info page.

Same modem with same settings works fine on 1043ND. It also works fine in OpenWRT using same WDR4900.

What could be the reason? The dd-wrt build is latest one and is working great apart from this mobile broadband issue.
