Thanks for the quick reply
Can now officially claim my 1st true brick.

As far as making the usb drive bootable for a firmware upgrade - any thoughts on that?

Sometimes can see a quick port flash once or twice when pinging it but not the normal port activity flashing LED

I tried using the reset button and powering off/on - no joy

The router does have a USB port and was hoping I could use that to downgrade the firmware
on bootup somehow? but haven't found any info about using the usb port for this.
No, USB ports have no use for recovery. Just need a LAN port; TFTP should work fine. Or does this model have a bootloader recovery mode (it's usually to hold the WPS button at powerup for a bit)? Looks like the default CFE IP is 192.168.10.1.

tftp server - didn't work
(probably cause can't even ping the router)

Booting with reset button or WPS held down 10 seconds
or with firmware on a usb stick - didn't work

Here's the manual Trendnet TEW-811DRU AC1200 Wireless Route
(just for future ref)

The serial flash chip is a Macronix MX25L6406E. I have experience pin shorting recovery with my Netgear WNR3500v2 which uses a similar Macronix chip. The pins that needs to be shorted are:

5 SI/SIO0
6 SCLK

The hassle is the serial chip is on the backside of the PCB, so it needs to be completely disassembled and removed from the case to be shorted. After shorting, the router responds to ping at 192.168.10.1 and there's also a TRENDnet Emergency miniWeb Server at http://192.168.10.1/. Use that web page to upload the original Trendnet firmware. tftp might be possible. Didn't test.

I saw this post a couple pages back on page 4 by SleepyBumand hoping someone can explain about "shorting the pins" to bring back the Emergency Web Server?

Does this mean short the 2 pins together before powering on the router and leave them shorted together? Or just shorting them together temporarily after booting?

Bought this router on Amazon a long time ago, it has served me well.

Currently running DD-WRT v3.0-r31825 mini (04/06/17)

I am hoping to use OpenVPN but the build I have doesn't seem to have OpenVPN settings available, only PPTP server/client under Services/VPN

Can anyone confirm any newer builds that supports OpenVPN?

I rather not flash to a newer build and not have OpenVPN and risk bricking it

Thanks

I don't think you'll find OpenVPN with only 8MB flash, but the latest build is only ~5.47 MB (5734420 bytes), so maybe entware on jffs (or with a USB drive and manual configuration) would work.

That said, it seems there hasn't been an 811DRU report since 36330, but the latest builds have generally been good.

BCM47081A0 device with 8MB flash, and the build is neutered. Sounds like the build recipe needs to be changed, I don't think there is a firmware size limitation... even the latest stock firmware for it is larger: https://www.trendnet.com/support/support-detail.asp?prod=100_TEW-811DRU

So what is the currently recommended version of DD-WRT to install on this router? I just went through a whole ordeal because I installed one from the Router Database (I didn't even know about this forum before and assumed the official website was a good source).

Was only able to recover after shorting the pins and getting the emergency web server, through which I could flash the default firmware.

It doesn't seem that people are reporting for this device in the build threads very often, the most recent post was in the 42355 build thread:

Does anyone have a full backup of the flash they'd be willing to share?

I mangled my flash/nvram. Restoring CFE and flashing DD-WRT does not allow me to boot anymore.

I get a KP as soon as the wl driver loads with "Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 00000000"

Hello All,

I flashed my tew 811dru v1 router using build 40559. After doing the flash my router now behaves as a dumb layer 2 switch. I do not get any layer 3 functionality or wi fi connectivity. I tried various default IP addresses and to no avail I cannot get to the admin page or ping it with the various default gateways I configured. I did not reset to factory default after flashing, hope that did not brick it. Although I can say its not bricked as it is functioning at the layer 2 level. I tried to use another router with layer 3 working to see what its ARP table picks up. Unfortunately I do not see the router's MAC address at all. I am assuming the router is just acting as a layer 2 pass through switch. I know this is a lot to digest but if anyone here has a way to fix this I would gr8tly appreciate it.

Thank You

OK only problem is I cannot access the device anymore after flashing. Not sure if device has old IP or a default one. I cannot tell either as there is no dhcp being done. does anyone one know of this happening after flashing. By this I mean having device become layer 2 dum switch, rather than router?

Thanks
