Interesting. One of mine is a v2.1 and I just looked; it too just says WTR54GS. My Netgear routers, on the other hand, show a version number.

OK, I don't know what happened over night while it was laying on my desk unplugged, but now the unit not longer works correctly. I plugged it in, and then plugged in the cat5 to make some config changes on it. The web interface is all wacked up. There are no graphics at all and just text. IE reports that there are problems that may not show the page correctly on the bottom. When I click details, all sorts of things are undefined. I unplugged everything, started again, same thing. I held the reset button in for 30, same thing but this time with the change password screen. The change password button doesn't seem to work either.

This is just odd. It was working before. The power LED stays amber the whole time unless I hold the reset button in as well.

Thoughts?

Thanks

Try Firefox instead of MSIE and see if that makes any difference.

I see this rarely; hitting F5 always fixes it for me. It might be worth trying a different build. I know that 14311 and 14896 work well in the WTR54GS.

Well today is a new day and it's working. How bizarre. I had already flashed it with 14896. So now I decided to try and reflash with 14929 micro. All seems to be ok today. Who knows what the next day will bring.

One observation is that the Power LED is very inconsistent on staying amber when it's powered on. Sometimes it will turn green within 30sec, other times it has taken between 3-4 mins (yes I did use my watch to time it). While it's amber, I am able to browse it just fine.

Anyone else's unit do the same thing. Same symptoms with both builds.

Thanks!

I've just installed AutoAP in my WTR54GSv1 (in three of them, actually) and it is totally slick. I recommend it.

I use a WTR54GSv2.1 to connect an Ooma VoIP telephone. It's a Client Bridge, running 14311 micro, connects to a WNR834Bv2 (running 14311 nokaid)which is now my primary router.

It acts a little like yours. The power LED stays amber for varying times when it is power-cycled if nothing is plugged in. But if the Ooma is plugged in, it will turn green as soon as I power the Ooma on, forcing communication over the wireless link.

Weird, I think, but doesn't seem to cause any real problem.

Incidentally, the Router Data Base lists, among others, 14896 Micro for the WTR54GSv2.1. Despite all cautions with 30-30-30 and 3-minute waits before and after flashing, 14896 Micro reliably does a partial brick on this router. Recoverable with TFTP, but still a drag. The symptom is that the GUI is unavailable, but ping responds TTL=100 then TTL=64, and the power LED sends the letter S forever at about 3 wpm in International Morse by switching between green and amber. It's easy to catch it with TFTP before it switches from TTL=100 to TTL=64.

Don't think I'll try 14896 on this router again. It works great on a v1, though.

My serial number starts with SJH1 but there is no version number or manufacture date printed on it. Any ideas on what version it is? I'd rather not open it up.

That's unusual, I think. Usually SJH0=v1, SJH1=v2, SJH2=v2.1, and all except v1 have the version number on the label, right after the model number.

V1 has 16Mb RAM 4Mb flash, and the others 8Mb and 2Mb. If DD-WRT were already installed, this would afford a way to tell, since the DD-WRT system information page (the one you get before logging on) tells how much RAM is in it. But you can't install DD-WRT without knowing which version it is! Catch-22.

Here's another possible way to tell: reset the router, then log onto it at 192.168.16.1 and look at the factory firmware's status page. This includes a firmware version number, which on my v1 with factory firmware says V1.0_15 and I bet will say something else on a v2 or v2.1, since they surely can't use the same firmware version with only half the flash and only half the RAM.

I would do this with my own v2.1 to see, but it no longer has the factory firmware; fortunately for this discussion I still have a v1 with factory firmware.

Have a look -- and tell us what version number the factory firmware is on yours -- it will help in answering future questions.

Hi,

could someone please help me with my WTR54GS?

I'm already running DD-WRT on it for over a year now and I wanted to update to the actual version. But I am a little bit confused which version to load.

My WTR54GS is a SJH005B... with no version printed on it. Just a label "Manufactured 11/2005" That should make it a v1.
But the already installed and old DD-WRT says it got only 8MB of RAM, that would make it a v2.x instead.

Some information from the DD-WRT Status-Page:

Code:
Router Model: Linksys WTR54GS
Firmware Version: DD-WRT v24-sp1 (07/27/08) micro - build 10012
CPU Model: Broadcom BCM5350 chip rev 0
Memory Total Available: 5724 kB / 8192 kB

Does it shows only 8MB because its the micro version or too old? Can I safe flash a bigger image? Actually I want to flash the VPN-Image.

Thanks in advance,

Dino

Somewhere in this thread it mentions that (1) UK models are v2 but have SJH0 numbers; and (2) I think someone mentioned that some routers marketed in Japan are that way too.

The UK versions don't have the retractable power plug (they use external power cords instead); is yours one of those?

As far I know, almost all versions shipped outside USA don't have the retractable power plugin as other countrys use different sockets, especially in Europe.

Mine is a german one, not UK.
