I would use the latest eko or bs beta build over the recommended build in the router database. I've read several top guns state that it isnt the best to go on(the router DB), some of the builds suggested aren't the best. First flash with the .chk if you dont have dd-wrt yet(stock router,eg), and then update to the newest std_nokaid file in the downloads - Other Downloads /others/eko/v24_tng/ directory and look for the newest date at the bottom. I always check the build number and search the forums for its related thread and see how its working for everyone whose been testing it first, esp if its the newest. But in most cases here for us, newer is better. Plus if you brick it you can always recover Wink
Heres the forum thread for build 14583
http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=73621&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Heres the special .chk file to flash if its your first time with dd-wrt firmware. http://www.dd-wrt.com/routerdb/de/download/Netgear/WNR834B/v2/dd-wrt.v24_std-wnr834bv2.chk/2100

Heres the direct link to std_nokaid firmware released on 6-09-10 (filename dd-wrt.v24-14583_NEWD_std-nokaid.bin) -
http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/others/eko/V24_TNG/svn14583/dd-wrt.v24-14583_NEWD_std-nokaid.bin

Heres the link to the newest build 14583 directory if you want to get a different feature set than std_nokaid http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/other-downloads?path=others%2Feko%2FV24_TNG%2Fsvn14583%2F

But just download std_nokaid if you want the most features that you can fit. i believe the no_kaid is support for classic xbox networking features (correct me if im wrong) so not much missing compared to a std build. If you happen to use kaid, just download a mini build

just remember like the previous poster mentioned, NEWD build only

I hope this helps someone out![/url]

Dommy99...good info with just a minor correction.

if you need KAI for the Netgear model...you're out of luck with the new builds...mini does not have KAI support. The Standard build of FW has KAI...all other smaller builds are lacking it....unfortunately, the new Standard builds won't fit on the Netgear units any longer.....however, old builds of Standard were small enough to fit. See the Peacock thread section #4 for size maximums.

Old builds like the 12874 standard will still fit and have KAI support.

redhawk0,
I need some clarification. Although I do not plan on running this, BS 14594 std generic is only 3.57MB while the router flash is 4MB. So shouldn't that file work?

Personally, I am probably going to run the mini generic.

BS 14594 directory:

Peacock thread note 4 covers this, as i said before, netgear units with a 4Mb flash can only use nokaid for the biggest flavor, std is now to big, you can however use standard with builds released 12-09 and back, newer builds, builds released in 2010, flash img is to big now.

as buddee said....there are limitations.

the CFE takes up 256K of the flash chip...and there is also 64K reserved for nvram....in addition to this on the netgear units...there is another "hidden" partition that contains the MAC addressing for the unit. (I can't remember the exact size...but it is small)....however, its just big enough to keep the std builds from loading.

damn you ! i followed your instructions to upgrade using bin (from previous mini version) and it bricked my router. is the only way to unbrick involving taking it apart and putting wires on it? sigh

What did you do? i didnt instruct anyone to update any specific way. i hope you did your 30-30-30 reset before and if you were flashing for the first time you know to do the chk file not the bin. if you followed my directions along with all that is explained in the peacock then you shouldnt have a bricked router. I basically gathered info in one handy post, everythings accurate aside from the nokai witch is talked about under. and isnt going to brick any routers. if youd give more info maybe we can explain what you did wrong but you cant expect to be helped when you dont give any information or seem like you know what you are doing. I hope this didnt sound mean, im not trying to be. Just give some more info and someone can help.

Need more info, like what browser are you using to do this with? Also which svn build number .chk are you trying to flash with?

I've been running 14311 nokaid on my WNR834b V2 for several weeks now, no problem. When acquired, it was running 13064, also without problems. All I did was a 30-30-30 reset, then upgrade through the GUI, and all went smoothly.

At first I tried the full 14311, and it simply refused to load it. Then I tried again with the nokaid, and it simply worked. most undramatically.

Then stop using local character set in your folder names.
