Any progress on this? I just picked a v2 up from newegg on sale for ~$80. Hoping to DD-WRT this thing soon. I picked it up since someone posted that it was DD-WRT compatible. Didn't read into that enough. They said it should be hardware compatible, not that there was a working version yet.

In that case if USB/NAS functions are not important then one should stick with the stock firmware and use AC7 as an AP behind a cheap tp-link 740n kind of dd-wrt router. The 5ghz radio is pretty good on AC7 and not being able to utilize it would be sort of an injustice to such gadget.

the 5 ghz radio is the part of the c7 which is the worst comparing to other available radio cards.

the whole story is the following
atheros/qualcomm tried to leave the ath9k way and took away the control for driver quality from the driver developers. all driver is now hardcoded into a on board firmware. and i mean everything from frequency, power and also wireless stack control. everything in a closed source firmware.
but then they found out that the on board flash memory is too small for the features required and they stuck with it. thats why combined ap and client feature is not possible with that device up to now. and the ap only as well as the client firmware are both buggy as hell

and there is also another problem. there is not just flash storage on the card for firmwares. no there is also a read only rom with firmware code.
this for sure is not upgradeable

so the archer c7 v1 5ghz is not removable mpcie (even though its pointless now)? but the archer c7 v2 will have 802.11ac support with ath10k as its a different newer better radio right?

the archer c7 v1 has a removeable mpcie card and it can be replaced with a ath10k compatible rev 2 card. but all my points remain. even the ath10k compatible cards suffer from the same problems with firmware code. we can also not maintain drivers for sure since all bugs are made by the firmware code and rom. i talked with felix (openwrt) some days ago about that issue. the card itself alows also ath9k like programming, but there was never a register documentation published and he told me that even then it would likelly take a year to create such a firmwareless driver.

whats your recommendation for 802.11ac right now? just wait till qualcomm atheros releases something else? i want qca only not broadcom(tried already).

qca/ath is no option yet. so dont focus on it. its a dead end design so far. broadcom has the only good working solution right now. mediatek devices comming soon as well (working already on such a device)

Just to clarify then, is this still just an issue with trying to use a ath10k card in a v1 or is there an issue with the v2 router as well?

Also, thanks tatsuya46 for the changesets. Looks like quite a bit is indeed done. Unfortunately, I'm a C# & JAVA developer by trade. While I've looked at this kind of work before a *tiny* bit, some of this is a little over even my head. It looks to me like it's nearly ready to compile. Am I wrong or are they just waiting on a unit to test this or is there more that still needs updated. I'm afraid I'm unfamiliar with the code base for DD-WRT. I haven't had a chance to look over these in detail and I'm not sure if I'd know what's wrong or missing even if I did....

Thanks for the feedback!

there is and will always be a problem with v1 devices. there is also no solution for it. the card is unsupported with all available driver. v2 can be supported, but i'm unable to get this device in germany right now. so i need a v2 to work on this

Good info about ath10k mysteries BrainSlayer. I just wonder how TP-Link managed to make this v1 card work well in their stock firmware. Especially on the last few betas I tried before selling off my unit, the 5ghz performance was nearly flawless.

easy. without ath10k. they are using a old driver from atheros. ath10k had support for v1 once, but dropped it a long time ago since atheros stopped the firmware support for the hw v1.0. since there is no supported firmware anymore, there is also no driver maintainance possible.

If you don't mind sharing, what card did you find to use?

I ended up with a V1.1 unit and would like to hack around with making it work.

Thank you!
