I am a total newb when it comes to this stuff, but I have a DIR-860L and I need to upgrade to dd-wrt or tomato or something so I can setup my router to use my VPN.

Is anybody running dd-wrt on their DIR-860L with relative success? Would I be better of trying this, or getting a cheap router off craigslist that supports DD-WRT (for $10-30) and using the DIR-860L in bridge mode?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi nlhaines

I am willing to pay for dd-wrt support for DIR-860l if e.g. you and others also are? Smile

I do however not know which way is the best for that purpose?

I have been writing about it here http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=873448 and e.g. also here http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=172121&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=104

I am also ready to call the Danish office of D-Link and get in touch with their Sales or Marketing department and ask them to donate a DIR-860l device to e.g. <Kong>.
In that case I would need to know if D-Link should use https://secure.dd-wrt.com/site/community/donations or some other way to send the device to e.g. <Kong>.

I'd be willing to pay for support. How much would we need to raise and how long would it take once we had the money?

Can anyone tell me what kind of performance hit I would take if I used the DIR-860L as a wireless bridge for a mid-low end DD-WRT router?

Well I prefer donations directly from the manufacturer.
Considering how many devices they give out to beta testers they definitely should have a development sample for a developer.

Once there is a first contact usually they will send also newer units:-)

If you contact them and they are interested you can let me know and I can contact them in order to arrange shipping.

The paypal donation is somehow ok, but this is only a one time thing, next unit comes out we have the same problem and until enough people are donation it can take some time.

I have downloaded build for DIR868L from this location.
ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2013/07-24-2013-r22118/dlink-dir868l/

It is working well on the DIR868L. I want to build my own custom kernel and root file system for this.

I download source code from here svn://svn.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrt

DIR868L has linux version 3.10.40.

I looked for kernel configuration file for DIL868L in dd-wrt/src/linux/universal/linux-3.10/.

I don't see that kernel configuration file is available under linux-3.10.

Also I am not able to find matching toolchain from
http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/other-downloads/current-toolchains.tar.bz2

Can anyone suggest how to get source code and matching toolchain for DIR868L?

Thanks

Just ran kongs 24170M STD NEWD build for a week. Ran great no issues, wireless worked fine with android phones, Pc's and mac I can recommend this as a stable build.

I do not use any usb or hotspot functions, my testing was mainly dhcp static assigment, qos, wireless 5GHZ AC and 2.4ghz, upnp and PPPOE.

Just upgraded to http://desipro.de/ddwrt/K3-AC-Arm/24200M/dd-wrt.v24-K3_AC_ARM_STD_NEWD.bin

Will See how it goes.

Hello

is a reset to factory defaults sufficient on the 868l or do I have to use the 30/30/30 method before loading the latest beta (factory to dd wrt)?

cheers

Use 30/30/30 as recommended in the tutorials.
I used the tutorial for dir 600 or 625 from dd wrt wiki, I couldn't find one for 868L but everything worked just fine.

Hey @a_l, were you able to contact D-Link?

I'm all up for donating something to help supporting the DIR-860L development. It seems like a good router with an awful vanilla firmware. I previously used an older Buffalo with dd-wrt and didn't imagine I'd miss it all this much. Neutral

Hi chuim and others

Well, a long story short. I had a phone call with a Danish sales representative of D-Link and afterwards I wrote with him via email. He forwarded my query twice internally, but yet there has not been any response.
Currently I'm setting up a page for management of donations.
Thereafter I will ask <Kong> and you all if you like the way I thought the donation process could be like.
Maybe tomorrow I have the page ready. (Also I will write a little more about what people in general could do to get some D-Link attention regarding getting them to send development samples to DD-WRT, but that is more of a long term goal.)

Okay I managed to set the page up today.
And here is what it looks like:
http://anderslind.dk/dd-wrt-for-d-link-dir-860l

I will ask <Kong> to get his feedback and acceptance. <Kong> will be able to see who donated what and for what purpose.
You are of course also invited to give your point of view as well.

Cheers Anders Smile

Hi chuim and anyone else

Thank you!

First of all I have a new initiative for which I hope <Kong> and you guys will like.

My former idea regarding donations will not work.
<Kong> tells me that he does not get any part of the DD-WRTs donations.
Another issue is that <Kong> really, really prefers some sort of collaboration with D-Link compared to a donation every now and then.
And I do understand him.

So therefore I have made this page:
http://anderslind.dk/dd-wrt-for-d-link-routers
which I of course would like to hear opnions about from <Kong>, you and anyone else interested.
Basically the idea is that us that want DD-WRT support should try to get in touch with D-Link with your preferred method. I have listed some methods.
Also I have supplied the page with some good arguments. If you have more ideas or have comments please tell! Smile

Cheers

Anders
