the pin on the router marked "vcc", is where you get the power..

ok, where on my converter does that go? I have two empty pins by the usb power labled GND and +5V.

I assume it's the 5v pin, but I don't want to ruin anything more by not waiting.

I think I was wrong. That adapter seems to need 5V to run.. Is that adapter capable of 3.3v ttl signals, or only 5v?

did it come with a usb power cable like the e-bay picture showed?

I thought it was capable of 3.3-5V input, with 5v just being the max available output. If so, does that mean I can just connect the router's VCC header to the 5V TTL header? Here's the ebay page I bought it from: http://www.ebay.com/itm/150786681292?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649.

I hope it will work. I suppose I could get another one that specifically says is 3.3v. I found this USB-only one that has a good description and spec sheets available for download. http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-TTL-Adapter-with-Cables-3-3V-5V-Dual-Voltage-Prolific-PL2303HX-Chip-/180987191148?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a23ad5f6c[/url]

I'm afraid it looks like a 5V Maxim chip in that photo MAX232EPE, for 3.3V use the recommended is max3232cpe, probably pin compatible.

There's usually a physical loop-back way of testing serial cables, linking external TX to RX via suitable resistor (1k, or 100 ohms or short if desperate!), then you can get what you type echoed back.

well, heck. I guess I can get my money back since they advertised falsely.

How is the prolific usb converter I linked to?

I finally received the USB 3.3v TTL adapter in the mail this afternoon and hooked it up.

I still cannot get any prompt within putty or hyperterminal. I've repeatedly tried to time the ctrl+C immediately after plugging in the power and have got no prompt. I start by having the TTL adapter connected on all 4 pins (GND, 3.3v, TX,RX). Drivers for the converter are updated and Device Manager says all is installed correctly.

The LEDs have changed, however. Lise usual, the LEDs all light brightly when first plugging in the power, but then go off. Now, however, if I remove the router's power, but with the TTL still connected, the LEDs blink very rapidly - almost to the point they're consistently lit. The blinking stops if I pull the 3.3v wire from the router.

I've read the Serial Recovery wiki and am not sure what else I can do until I can get a cfe prompt.
