I have an old rt-n16 that has Tomato RAF 1.28 on it.
I'd like to flash to dd-wrt and use either ‘Repeater’ or ‘Repeater Bridge’ feature.
It is safe to just use the tomato GUI to flash the latest dd-wrt firmware?

from the download page, this is the latest
DD-WRT: Factory flash dd-wrt.v24-40559_NEWD-2_K3.x-big-RT-N16.trx 2019-08-06 26,77 MB
DD-WRT: Factory flash dd-wrt.v24-40559_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega_RT-N16.trx 2019-08-06 7,40 MB
DD-WRT: Factory flash dd-wrt.v24-40559_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_RT-N16.trx 2019-08-06 3,43 MB

I don't need anything else just use it as a repeater or repeater bridge, stable is important, which one do you recommend I use? (old version is fine if it is more stable).

Thank you!

None of the above. Don't use the router database. Look in the forum build release threads. That was not the best build. "Other downloads" "betas"

Thanks for the info. After some search and reading, I found the installation wiki.

Based this wiki https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Asus_RT-N16, there are two guides, one is install from factory firmware and the other is upgrading dd-wrt. In my case, I have tomato RAF on it already, which guide should I follow?

In the upgarding guide, in Broadcom K3X folder https://download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2020/01-30-2020-r42174/broadcom_K3X/, it says download ***K3.x-big-RT-N16.bin file, but seems the above link only has ***K3.x-big-RT-N16.trx file. stuck here...

Appreciate any help... Thanks.

Asus only uses .trx files as far as I know of, I really don't think it will make a difference. It isn't advised to go from one custom firmware to another, you may want to revert to stock firmware first. I also noticed that you posted on Linksysinfo forums about FreshTomato. That would be a more direct 'upgrade' than switching to DD-WRT.

yes I did. I will be checking if that supports wireless repeater mode easily. from what I know tomato RAF 1.28 doesn't seem to work with wireless repeater mode (no cable, not changing the primary router).

Only thing I know that FreshTomato supports is WDS / WDS + AP modes. I have not tinkered with all of that on FT.

that's similar to tomato, need config on both routers.
my primary router is AC1900 from tmobile, flashed asus merlin.

I think maybe I will revert rt-n16 to stock firmware first.

If you go into Recovery Mode, you can flash DD from there, and reset nvram. The wiki seems to have some question as to the access method on that router, so if you verify it, let us know. Smile

Someone probably also needs to address the *.bin file reference in the wiki, since the K3.x file is a trailed build with appropriate header. In other words, you *should* be able to flash directly to the K3.x file if everything works correctly.

I've reverted back to the stock firmware, in fact it supports "repeater mode" directly. Same SSID and Password for the wifi.

How do we know which devices are connected to primary, and which devices connect via the repeater?

By which one lists it as connected. You won't see a device connected to the repeater on the main AP, nor vice-versa. No firmware will do that.
