I've done a search in this forum before asking.

So far everyone asking this same question hasn't mentioned the revision of their RT-N12, they only mention the model.

I've read that the RT-N12HP is similar to RT-N12D1 and you can install the firmware RT-N12B1 in it.

I want to ask if my asus RT-N12HP_B1 is the same as the RT-N12HP? No one ever mentioned their revision so I'm not 100% sure about this.

In addition, browsing through the supported devices list isn't particularly obvious either because it only lists the RT-N12 but did not explicitly list RT-N12HP. Notice I underline the HP?

I just need to verify and be 100% sure before I flash anything.

It's good practice right?

ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2017/05-02-2017-r31924/broadcom_K3X/dd-wrt.v24-31924_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega_RT-N12B1.trx

I believe HP stands for High Power (A more powerful radio for the wifi)

Does the file you linked support openVPN?

I'm mainly using custom firmware for ssh and openVPN purposes.

So just flash the .trx file? There's no initial factory to ddwrt flash like the others?

All routers with 8 Mbyte of flash and higher have OpenVPN.

Don't expect any high throughput though with a 300Mhz CPU.

Actually from wikiDevi the RT-N12HP & RT-N12HP_B1 have the same BCM chip as the RT-N12C1, RT-N12D1 & RT-N12VP
The A1 & B1 are just a bit different.

I would do it as so ---
http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=1074201#1074201

This is an unsupported router so anything you do is at your own risk.

I'm running new build K3.x 31924 on my RT-N12D1
been up 4 days, 19:35 no problems but it is just a WAP + guest network.

Note: I have two RT-N12D1 and have never installed a dd-wrt build on one that is made for another
router ..... not sayin it want work just that the generic builds do work. There is a ton of info
all thru the post/link I made... most of which is not relevant now w/new K3.x builds of this year.
Also know that if you are using this for a main gateway device its speed will not likely be more
than 50 Mbps running dd-wrt K3.x build. For faster you need use k2.6

K3.x on that router running a VPN should do est 8 Mbs at best Razz

Interesting info, especially the one where you said running k2.6 is faster than 3.x builds...

I also posted this in https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=4283865&st=0&p=84818893&#entry84818893
(which is my local malaysian forum)

They confirmed the RT-N12HP_B1 and RT-N12B1 uses the exact same SoC too.

Tomato firmware officially supports my router. Since dd-wrt doesn't officially support my router, do you think that in my case it's better I use tomato instead?

They also offer the features I want.

I'll be flashing the shibby's tomato build 138 (tomato-K26-1.28.RT-N5x-MIPSR2-138-Max.zip)

Think it's a better choice in my case?

Was anybody able to flash the recent revisions of RT-N12HP_B1 with DD-WRT? I've tried a couple of versions with Asus Firmware Restoration utility, including the old ones:

dd-wrt.v24-17990_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_RT-N12B1.trx
dd-wrt.v24-18774_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_RT-N12B1/C1.trx (that was
reported to work here https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=261415 and here https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=900152)

dd-wrt.v24-32868_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega_RT-N12B1.trx

and recent ones:
dd-wrt.v24-35831_NEWD-2_K2.6_openvpn.bin
dd-wrt.v24-36698_NEWD-2_K2.6_openvpn_small.bin

None of it seems to work. The router does not respond on 192.168.1.1 after the firmware is flashed. My current stock firmware is RT-N12HP_3.0.0.4_380_2943-g7820149.trx .

P.S. Finally, after degrading to older stock firmware, dd-wrt.v24-25974_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_RT-N12C1.trx did worked.
