Hey guys.
Just wanted to ask if there is any chance that my WRT54GL can achieve speeds faster than 100mbps, maybe with the help of the DD-WRT software.

Looking to get a NAS, my current 100mbps speed would bottleneck the transfer speeds a lot.

If not possible, would buying the Linksys E3000 be the best next thing I could get? (I've used my faithful WRT54GL for so long its going to be very sad to replace it :/ ) Of course DD-WRT firmware is a must Smile

Sure it can. This is what you do:

1. Acquire GBE switch. Get an 8 port one for future-proofing.
2. Plug existing devices into switch and use one TP cable to connect the "uplink" port of your GBE switch to one of the LAN ports of your WRT54GL.
3. Enjoy GBE speed on your WRT54GL.

Smile

I gotta say... that's exactly what I do. I have an 8-port smart/managed gigabit switch and I uplink that to my internet router. It works great! Smile

Would this switch work?

http://forums.ncix.com/forums/?mode=showthread&forum=105&threadid=2575778&pagenumber=0&msgcount=0&subpage=1&product_id=36825

And what is the difference between let's say this and an unmanaged switch?

Do I need to do any extra steps when I need to port forward to one of my computers on the network?

the only difference between a managed switch and an unmamanaged one is that the managed switch(which costs more) has some sort of status or monitoring web page and some intelligence built in to allow you to do some fancy tricks like vlans, ect....DD-WRT is basically a managed switch too.

for simplicity sake, just pick up an unmanaged switch and just plug it in. all the routing happens at the physical layer so nothing else should need to be configured.
