USB HDD "No space left on device" on rem file/dir

Netgear WNR3500L
Firmware: DD-WRT v24-sp2 (08/07/10) mega
Just set up USB and FTP with 1TB HDD on USB
Copied some files of a few kb to HDD with FTP client, then tried to delete and got message "No space left on device". Trying to remove in Telnet, commands just ignored.

Looked at lots of posts for this message but can't find a solution. Don't really know much about this, just trying to set up NAS and following instructions in http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Slim_samba2. All seemed to work ok until tried to remove some files.
Any help greatly appreciated.
