Hello all,

I am quite a novice when it comes to this stuff (not networking in general, just dealing with non-OEM router firmware). I installed DD-WRT onto my WRT54G2 V1 router (DD-WRT v24-sp2 (10/30/0Cool micro to be specific) and have generally had success running it as a repeater bridge for the last year or so.

Lately, though, I have been running into performance issues. Here is where I hit a brick wall in knowledge and look to the forums for some assistance (I did try searching for this information, but could not find anything that actually made sense to me):

Am I running a good build for my device? Where do I find information that in plain English tells me what build is most recommended. I have been trying very hard to find something like that, but without success. Oh, there are threads that tell me "such and such a build is recommended for x hardware" but I don't know if that applies to me or how to update (or possibly downgrade?) to it. This is very confusing for me and if someone could help clear it up I would very much appreciate it.

Also, I have been looking through wiki documentation on how to set up the repeater bridge (I did originally run into an issue I discovered was entirely my fault for not reading the documentation properly). I have a physical interface and a virtual interface (wl0 and wl0.1 respectively). Originally I had them both using the same SSID, but then read something that said I will get better performance giving them different SSIDs. I have done that, but am now finding information that seems to indicate they should be the same? Is my setup generally correct?

I'm asking these questions because lately when we have 2 people on WoW (all 3 of us play it and it's actually working out to be a decent test of our network) the latency through the repeater bridge goes haywire and we get disconnects/very high lag. I know some of our problem is coming from the ISP, but I am looking to make the network as effective as possible to eliminate as many points of failure as I can.

I think that's enough to go on. If anyone is willing to help I appreciate it and will provide any data required.

I did look there; actually, it was one of the first places I looked (thanks to google bringing it up for me as one of the first hits to my query).

My confusion is that I'm not sure which of those build to use. I looked at the brainslayer builds, but am unsure if those are the correct ones. Also, while I see one for wrt54g I don't see one for wrt54g2. It also looks as if the device I'm using won't work with NEWD2 builds, not that I know what that means (it looks to mean I need to use a Kernel K2.4.37 build, but I'm not sure what/where those are).

So, you can see why I would need to ask for help. I'm sure the information in the threads I have found is all good, but it doesn't tell me what I need to know (or, more specifically, it doesn't tell me what I need to know in a way I can understand well enough to act on).

I did read the peacock thread over a couple of times. The build I can find that seems to make the most sense is this one:

ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2010/08-12-10-r14929/broadcom/dd-wrt.v24_mini_wrt54g.bin

However, that has wrt54g in the title, not wrt54g2. I don't know if it will work properly and want to avoid bricking my device. As I mentioned previously: I don't have enough of an understanding to know if this is the right build or not.

WRT54g2 has 2mb Flash so you can use dd-wrt.v24_micro_generic.bin
ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2010/08-12-10-r14929/broadcom/dd-wrt.v24_micro_generic.bin

upgrading to other than the mentioned firmware might brick your router.

wrong build, this will not work on your WRT54g2, it will not fit due to the 2mb flash, whereas wrt54g has 4mb

Thanks so much for spelling that out for me. I'll try the build you linked and hopefully I get better performance overall.
