I've searched and possibly missed this, but as a new member, what is the difference between V23 and V23 SP1, i.e., what does SP1 mean? Is the "alpha" download V24? I'm about to load something on a WRTSL54GS...

I'm not authoritative on this, but v23 sp1 was a 'final' version of v23.
Under the untested_alpha_unstable you will find the v23 sp1 multilanguage. It is really just some tweaks to the final sp1. Quite stable. You will be happy with final v23 sp1 or with the multilanguage versions. I'm running the multilanguage v23 versions in a production environment as well as at home. No problems.
v24 is based on the v23 code base but adds multiple virtual wireless. That is, you can have a wireless lan with SSID 'Joe's wireless' encrypted WPA2 AES, and another SSID 'Joe's Open wireless' with no encryption. There are some problems with multiple virtual lans, one of which is that each has the same MAC address, so clients can be confused a bit. Though I believe that v24 is stable already, you might want to wait a while before trying v24.
v23 SP1 is "Service Pack 1" for v23. The version currently in Alpha is v24. It's a bit confusing as SP1 is still being worked on (towards a SP2) and these nightly builds are available in the "untested_alpha_unstable/dd-wrt.v23 SP1 multilanguage" directory in the downloads section.
I would go for v23 SP1 Final as a first shot (remember to flash your router with the mini version 1st!! - then SP1) and then try a nightly build if you aren't happy with SP1 Final.
