Hello to all, my first post here,

I want to establish a Wlan piont to point connecting to have access to my studio from home. the link would be about 4 km. I was thinking of using two lancom l-54 ag accesspoints with two 28dba parabolic antennas, having max perfomance and security.
Now I found here these new media routerboards having the possibility to use more mini pci wlan cards with dd-wrt support.
Maybe it is esagerated, but is this system "better"? faster? has more perfomance. I have seen that it is more flexible for the future upgrades with never mini pci cards for example wimax ?
but I can't find any mini pci wlancard with 1000mWatt output like the lancom can perform,
how is the funcionality of dd-wrt on the avila boards in comparison to the lancom especially Qos, encryption, stability, and so on
may be someone can give me some advice or a discription on how others did, or other experience?

thanks in advance to all, have a nice day

L54ag has 266MHz Intel iXP420
GW2348-4 533Mhz

Lancom uses no high power mini-pci cards, so power output is max ca. 65mW (17dBm). In Europe you are allowed to send with 1000mW EIRP (incl. antenna gain minus cabel loss and you hove to consider some more things (tpc, dfs, radar)
no problem with Lancom.

DD-Wrt uses MadWifi? and it should be implementet there???

da.ca wrote:

QoS, Encryption, stability,... very good with Lancom.

I tried some things with dd-wrt on avila and wrap, but missing some options (in the newest beta the option for outdoor band gets lost? also g-only not available)
wpa with wds does not work (with lancom no problem)
turbo mode in 802.11a on avila is broken?
no option for atheros hardware compression.

if you don't want to wait you should use lancom.
if you can wait maybe dd-wrt will become a good alternative?

turbo mode on 802.11a is not broken, i disabled the compression feature since it was making too much troubles with other hardware, especially if you want to use wpa/wpa2 encryption. so i decided not to use this feature since nobody needs it really.
the outdoor selection missing was just a misstake and is already corrected in my current source. i will release the fix today.

WPA for WDS is not specified. with WDS STA and WDS AP wpa/wpa2 will work for sure, the classical wds (point 2 point called at lancom) does not support wpa/wpa2 at the l54ag too.

gmode was replaced with b/g mode which supports mixed mode for it. a pure g-mode will be introduced later this week

I could not configure it on the avila:

where is the problem with an option (enabled/disabled), default disabled?
read at the mikrotik page, that wpa would not work with encryption. why? don't have this restriction on lancom aps.

Lancom support WPA/WPA2 in Point2Point and it works.

How to configure WPA AP/WPA STA? Do i have to configure any MACs at the WDS Tab? Or only the SSID?

On the Lancoms i have on option for DFS Rescan time, but i could not find any option for madwifi to force a dfs scan. would be a nive option, because the ap have to scan 60sec, that should be done at night...

turbo mode:
go to the wireless basic page and enable turbo mode->done
in the last build i did a misstake, thats why it is not shown. i will release a update tonight, then its visible again. from commandline you can still enable it by
nvram set ath0_turbo=1
nvram commit
rc restart

dfs is required on 5 ghz for outdoor usage. so if regulatory is enabled there is no way to disable dfs since its always enabled in regulatory mode

wds ap and sta is very easy to configure. go to the wireless basic tab and set the wireless mode to wds ap or wds sta and type in the ssid you want to use.

at the lancom you will find the wds station mode as "bridging support" option in the wireless physical or logical settings (cannot remember exactly)

for the compression support i will think about a additional option for enabling/disabling

turbo mode option is shown, as you can see in the other thread the option works on the wrap, but not on the avila. i will try it again at the weekend.

I don't want to disable it, but force a (maybe additional) rescan at night, without a restart of the complete ap.
If i'm right a scan takes 60sec and have to be done at least every 24h, so i want to ensure, that if the ap doesn't detect radar... the scan will be done at night.

turbo works on avila, believe me (consider to use a turbo mode supporting regulatory domain (all etsi domains are turbo enabled))

i'm using it on installations here as backhault link on avila boards and i dont have any troubles with it. the driver implementation on the avila is 100% identical to the wrap board

btw:
compression and fast framing selection support has been added in the recent version

There is something wrong!
I installed DD-WRT v24 RC (04/03/07) std and tested again with 2 CM9.
Reset to factory defaults.

ath0 set to G-Only, Turbo -> seems ok.
change to A-Only -> no effect.

ath0 IEEE 802.11Tg ESSID:"dd-wrt"
Mode:Master Frequency:2.437 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated

ath1 -> A-Only. Turbo -> seems ok:

ath1 IEEE 802.11Ta ESSID:"dd-wrt"
Mode:Master Frequency:5.57 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated

reboot the avila:

ath0 IEEE 802.11Tg ESSID:"dd-wrt"
Mode:Master Frequency:2.437 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated

ath1 IEEE 802.11Tg ESSID:"dd-wrt"
Mode:Master Frequency:2.437 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated

wireless settings:
Regulatory Domain: Germany
Regulatory: Enabled
Wireless Mode: AP / AP WDS
Wireless Network Mode: A-Only
Turbo Mode: Enabled
Wireless Channel: Auto

without Turbo Mode enabled everythings seems ok:

ath0 IEEE 802.11a ESSID:"dd-wrt"
Mode:Master Frequency:5.5 GHz Access Point: 00:0B:6B:0A:9C:7A

ath1 IEEE 802.11a ESSID:"dd-wrt"
Mode:Master Frequency:5.5 GHz Access Point: 00:0B:6B:0A:9E:72

also after reboot the cards working at 5Ghz in IEEE 802.11a.
I only changed Turbo Mode: Enabled/Disabled (in webinterface)

Did another test with setting turbo enabled only with:
nvram set ath0_turbo=1
nvram commit
rc restart

but nothing happend:
ath0 IEEE 802.11a ESSID:"dd-wrt"
Mode:Master Frequency:5.5 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated

after reboot it shows again:
ath0 IEEE 802.11Tg ESSID:"dd-wrt"
Mode:Master Frequency:2.437 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated

after enabling turbo mode the webinterface only provides
"Auto" and "6 - 2437 Mhz (Noise -102 dBm)" as Wireless Channel
(Wireless Network Mode set to A-Only)

another test with regulatory disabled, channel fix to 114:
ath0 IEEE 802.11a ESSID:"dd-wrt"
Mode:Master Frequency:5.57 GHz Access Point: 00:0B:6B:0A:9C:7A

enabling turbo:
ath0 IEEE 802.11Ta ESSID:"dd-wrt"
Mode:Master Frequency:5.57 GHz Access Point: 00:0B:6B:0A:9C:7A

rebooting

ath0 IEEE 802.11Ta ESSID:"dd-wrt"
Mode:Master Frequency:5.57 GHz Access Point: 00:0B:6B:0A:9C:7A

everything ok.

So there is something wrong with
Wireless Channel: Auto
Or what's wrong with my configuration?

I thought I have to set it to "auto" because of DFS?

you're right. auto should be the right setting.

can you do me a favor. gimme the output of wlanconfig athX list freq in that case where turbo isnt working, but enabled

full iwconfig output is required and interesting too

just installed DD-WRT v24 RC (04/06/07) std

now in a-only, turbo mode enabled i can select channel 6, 106, 114, 122, 130.

with Wireless Channel: auto it always selects channel 6

same with DD-WRT v24 RC (04/14/07) std (SVN revision 6562).

if the avila is not working in turbo-mode and I enable turbo-mode on the webinterface, then everything is ok. also when i select a channel manually and than switch to "auto".

but after a reboot the avila always select channel 6.

@BS if you need remote access or some other infos please post or write PM.

yes, as you can see in the previous posts, I set it to a-only, but it selects channel 6 after reboot.
