I would like to ask anyone about what would be the best setup for having the most optimum performance for an antenna for inside and long range outside transmition/reception what is the best antenna option to put it simple. I have a wifi setup and would like to share to others along with having optimum performance for myself and others. Also I live in a house that is located on a hill that overlooks the city about 1 mile 180 deg view east to west. I am asking this of people here that have it setup and what kind of price and performance that they get and what kind of antenna I should get that is not too pricy

I've got a 10.5dBi omni on my front porch, still have -65dB signal indoors and 1/8 mile coverage through heavy foliage. I'm not sure what my max coverage would be as there isn't much open range nearby, but I'm betting its well over 1/4 mile as it sits.

I used spare parts from a wireless job I did a couple of years ago, but the antenna is around $50, something like $25-50 for the cable (around 35ft LMR400), about $4 per connector. A 15dBi would run around $130, a 180* sector starts around $150.

http://www.wlanparts.com/ has a great selection of WLAN gear. I've purchased the 15dbi omni and mount with great results (roughly 1 mile line of sight) with no amp.

Unfortunetly they don't ship to Canada.(Even though it's listed as an option) I had ordered this same exact 15dbi Omni and they cancelled my order and refunded my payment withought any explanation. I sent e-mails and left a voice mail but still nothing. So it's good only for the US it seems.

the best omni-directional you can get is about 12dBi gain. This, connected by no more than 6 ft. of coax to a good Access Point for WiFi can deliver about 1500 ft. line of sight reliable links if the client side is a decent product.

Each wall with a pair of drywall sheets reduces the range about 50%. Trees, worse. Masonry, more than drywall.

WiFi was NOT intended for more than a couple hundred feet - it's called a wireless LOCAL area network.

YMMV.

You should get two APs.
One with a proper (14dBi+) panel antenna, configured for e.g. channel 1 for outdoor use.

The other one with regular antenna on e.g. channel 11 for your personal use.

Costs will obviously be twice as high, but performance will be a lot better

With proper antennae on both sides of the connection (and free space in between) you can easily get a range of 5000ft easily.
