I'm now running DD-WRT V23-SP1 std.
I saved the a nvram backup file from the original DDWRT firmware V23 mini

oh man...i don't know. maybe the upgrade didn't 'take' all the way. i've upgraded wrt's before and 1/4 of the features/buttons don't work. restoring to factory defaults and reapplying the firmware usually fixes it, or the firmware version below the most current one [ie a more stable one].
other than that i'm out of suggestions. some of the more knowlegeable programmers might be able to help.
Just for future reference, if you telnet in, you can change the root password by running the command 'passwd'. _________________ WPA2-RADIUS AP: DD-WRT v24 SP1 std on WRT54GS v2.1
