However, I can very happily announce that BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2 - 2014 - 12-22-2014-r25697).bin seems to have the bug fixed!
The problem is: Only mini works (3.1 MB). For std (3.9MB) I get "upgrade failed". I guess because it's too big (although memory is 4MB). In the worst case I can live with mini. However, I would love the following features from std: IPv6, SSH, HTTPS, SNMP. Is there any std-like version that would work wirh 54GL?
If you're willing to try different firmware, I'll say shibby's tomato-K26-1.28.RT-MIPSR1-132-Mini worked for me.
tomato-K26-1.28.RT-MIPSR1-132-MiniIPv6 also works.
Please notice the MIPSR1 marker when finding these builds.
His uses an early version of Broadcom's version 5 drivers.
Please note that upon upgrading, you will have to reset your router by holding the reset button on the back when it boots up fully. Default credentials should be root/admin.
I would definitely overclock the chip to 250 MHz though as reportedly K2.6 builds on an old router doesn't work well.

Which file are you looking at exactly? "dd-wrt.v24_std_generic.bin" is 3.7 MB, but I use the VPN generic on the GL 1.1, which is 3.5 MB. I've been using 27858 for the in-laws GW and AP for a few months, with zero issues. Kryptex said there was an NVRAM memory leak problem on that build, but I haven't gotten around to changing those units, especially since they've had no problems.

I've been using it since it was born on the WRT54Gv8.2 and have had it on many others. The only glitch I've found with it on WRT54G boxes is the site survey only halfa$$ works --- meaning, when it does show something it will usually be only 1~3 networks at most when there are actually 7~10 within its range. This build seems to use more memory but I wouldn't say it is a leak ... it just uses more but was never a problem on any router I used it on --- in fact the WRT54Gv8.2 has 2MB flash w/only 8RAM and its been running for months with the Boy's XB1, his phone & his iPad connected with heavy activity non-stop...... oh yea it is also in WDS mode with a WAP54Gv3.1 wired to an old BRDplayer connected to the back TV -------- streams Netflix without a problem

A lot of that is network dependant.... What all you have doing what. Also depends where you test at and what time of the day..... I've got many different results using same devices,.......
Just get something that works for you and be happy or pick at every little thing and you will never ever be satisfied. No one can tell you what is going to work best for you.... We ain't there

Probably if you have <10Mbps WAN conection and not a whole lot going on within the network.
I don't control network traffic with them but -
I have an extensive LAN stretching over 1/2 mile using a bunch of lowend routers but I can stream HULU & Netflix x2 simultaneously from any point in the network plus from within the LAN throw files around wherever and stream movies or pics from a WIN10 DLNA device to any smart TV or DLNA receivable device....the bandwidth & speed depending on what's going on at any givin time but nothing ever stops.
I currently have <20Mbps WAN controlled w/QOS by main router.
Bufferbloat is a real thing but most people that try to make it better usually only hurt themselves.
The old WRT54G boxes are still good for many things but hooking many devices to one just aint it --- and to do that thru any NATed connection trying for better than 10Mbps running QOS is just not very smart....They don't have the processer power.
And NO I don't use QOS on any LAN device ... tried it once upon a time but never found it useful on my network
Wow, DD-WRT seems to be a "proliferation" as the Android firmwares
As mentioned I installed dd-wrt.v24_std_generic.bin (BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2 - 2014 - 12-22-2014-r25697) now. It works but unfortunately the WiFi connection seems to be unstable: Connection drops regularly and running a ping to the ap in background I see "request timed out" once in a while (sometimes bursts). [Test laptop is right next to AP and a D-Link AP at identical position worked stable for years).
Furthermore I miss SNMP and HTTPS on this build.
