Hi guys, I'm completely new to this and sorry if doing something wrong.
I'm really confused on buying my first router.
As per my budget and availability, shortlisted two cheap TP-LINK routers
1. wr740n
2. Wr841n
But here I'm bit confused
I will be using it as router and also as repeater sometime, so got some questions
1. Is it possible to use the above router as repeater or range extender using stock firmware wds?
a. If yes, which one or both?
b. If no, is it possible with ddwrt?
2. Which one from above got good ddwrt support?
3. Is two antenna of wr841n better while using it as repeater compared to single antenna of wr740n?
4. Will two antenna cover more range or just the speed?
5. Will two antenna provide more connection stability?
Please guys suggest me the better one i should buy from the above two and sorry if asking too much in my first post.
Can you please take some time answer all those questions i have asked, it'll help me understand these stuff lil more and help while buying any other router.
Typically stock implementations of wds aren't very good IMO. In order for it to work as desired, you'd need 2 atheros routers on dd-wrt or 2 broadcom routers on dd-wrt. The different chipsets don't play nicely together. You should be able to setup a client bridge with either of the two you mentioned though, which seems like what you want.
Thanks mwboss for the info.
But the router is a netgear one that i want to extend range.
The thing is we use a shared internet connection in my hostel but the reception in my room is very bad, so thought it would be great to extend it using wds or something. Range extender is not an option as it would be useless after i leave that hostel.
The network is open no password but i don't have access to the router admin panel.
Can you suggest me how to extend it using this router
If you don't have control of the netgear, wds isn't really an option. There is no repeater mode for atheros chipsets, but you can set it up as a client bridge with a VAP to accomplish the same thing.
Yes, WR841 will give you max 300 Mb/s wifi connection (dual stream), WR740 only 150 Mb/s (single stream). _________________ THERE ARE NO STRANGERS HERE; ONLY FRIENDS YOU HAVEN'T YET MET.

WR841N can give twice the speed of WR740N, in ideal conditions, even in Repeater or Client mode. It's obvious.
Regarding range, 2 antennas are better than 1, isn't it ?
FYI, the difference between WR841ND and WR841N is that the first has detachable antennas (hence the extra D), while the second one doesn't. _________________ THERE ARE NO STRANGERS HERE; ONLY FRIENDS YOU HAVEN'T YET MET.

If I would be you, then I'd have gone for dual antenna (Wr841n) as it is much better than the single one. _________________ Regards,
