My current setup:
- Router 1 directly conntected with WAN to the internet
- Router 2 (TP-Link TL-WR1043ND) using DD-WRT in repeater mode, connected to Router 1 and running OpenVPN to tunnel all traffic of connected clients
I can connect through Router 2 to the internet (so repeater mode works) and the OpenVPN Status shows connected (my VPN provider AirVPN confirms this on their webpage). However, when surfing my real IP address is used. So the VPN connection is established, but it's not being used as a tunnel for my traffic.
I'm pretty sure it's a simple routing problem.. but my networking knowledge is really limited and I couldn't find a solution for that problem yet.
Running VPN on a Repeater does not make any sense.
Can the routers be connected by a cable?
The packets will be transmitted over the wireless several times making bad throughput.
I think I could also connect them by cable, but wireless in this setup would be better.
I know that the performance through wireless is worse than directly with cable.
Is it possible with a wireless setup or do I need to change it to cable?
And if so, which options needs to change?
use the DD-Wrt Router in Router Mode with own DHCP.
All connected clients need to use this router as gateway to use the vpn...
thats all ...
Thanks, I finally made it
First I reset everything to default. Then used the client mode to connect to router 1, and everything works now perfectly, even with VPN.
I didn't think/know about repeater mode/bridging would make this problem before.
I hope this is not hijacking the the thread, my apologies if yes.
I have OpenVPN set up in my residence. I manage an apartment building at a different location. I want to connect a DD-WRT wirelessly to my tenant's WiFi and have only my DD-WRT connect to my residence's VPN. I want this so that I can have a WiFi enabled IP surveillance camera connect to the DD-WRT and be on my local network.
Would I set the DD-WRT as a repeater and then configure it to connect to my VPN?

Hi there, great that you found a solution! I was wondering if there was any chance of a posting of the updated screenshots of the updated DD-WRT configs ? Been struggling with the same issue for 2 days now, and does not appear that so many configs need to be changed after all?
My most recent attempt was placing the Wireless settings into Client mode, changing from Gateway to Router mode, but still the VPN does not work, and I don't know how to get Router2 SSID to broadcast (since not using in Repeater mode with the virtual SSID any more).
So I can currently get through to the Internet using a cable in Router2 wirelessly linked to Router1, but I need to be able to do that wirelessly and using the VPN !
Thanks!
