Hi, I am a bit of a newbie here and I need some clarification for this question. I have a linksys e3000 and want to put one of brainslayer's build on it but I do not know if I should go with K2.6 or K3.X.
Can someone explain the difference between the two?
There is a difference in NVRAM size, 60 kB in K2.6 builds and 64 kB in K3.x builds. With a K3.x build you could get at most 70-80 Mbps WAN to LAN download speed, with a K26 build you could get at most 150 Mbps. _________________ 2 times APU2 Opnsense 21.1 with Sensei

Something else that should be mentioned is that the K3.x support drives larger than 2TB where as the K2.6 only support drives *up to* 2TB. _________________ E3000 22200M KongVPN K26

k2.6 and k3.x will not affect your speed so much but the build versions will. so if i were you, i would just test to see which one works best for me (dont ask me, i havent tested in a while)
-HOWEVER-
if you need the features that k2.6 does not have, then k3.x may be your best bet. as for speeds, thats up to the build version. _________________ For people who are new to the dd-wrt forums >> http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html#rtfm

I realize that K2.6 vs 3.X is an old debate, but What does K2.6 and K3.X mean? The number doesn't represent the Linux kernel that shows on the Status page.
3.X versions are still slower for older hardware, but what security fixes? Are newer Linux kernel security fixes part of K2.6 builds?

K2.x vs K3.x are indeed the linux kernel versions that you will find on the router status main page.
If you are most concerned about security then always run K3.x builds as things are still being updated AFAIK... not all security things can be rolled back into K2.4 and K2.6 kernels and so there might be some security flaws; though I have yet to see anything super glaring pose an issue since BS does a great job.... that said the K2.x builds tend to allow better WAN speeds if you're trying to eek out the most bandwidth from these old routers. K3.x is more CPU and Ram intensive eating away bandwidth possibilities...more so if you're trying to run Q.o.S. too. When you use these old routers they tend to be good to about 75mbps with any q.o.s. You can eek out a little more by using shortcut forward engine and overclocking the router, but q.o.s. is out the door then. _________________ FORUM RULES

2.4 kernels would definitely be a stretch to backport patches to, but 2.6 is still being patched by RHEL until the end of this month, if memory serves correctly. I doubt (m)any network appliance vendors are still patching kernels older than 3.x.

Ping in games is more important to me than speed. I get about the same speed with K2.6 and 3.X (running latest Kernel 4.4). With K2.6, ping is consistently 15-20ms lower.
Any idea if K2.6 has POODLE vulnerability patch back-ported?

I would have to dig through all the "new" / open tickets regarding poodle and sort through SVN to see if anything was implemented 5+ years ago, TBH. I just know that there haven't been many patches to the 2.6 kernel itself over the past two years or so that I have been here. _________________ "Life is but a fleeting moment, a vapor that vanishes quickly; All is vanity"

Is there a list of commonly considered stable builds of DD-WRT? I know past v24 all builds are considered beta, but perhaps some builds are known to be more stable than others?

No not really it also depends on the router used.
Normally use one of latest builds unless there are unfavourable reports in the build threads.
For the R7800 I have a list in the R7800 guide but that is specifically for that router, what works on an R7800 (and similar) might brick a Broadcom router and vice versa
