Sorry , I don't see where he said he converted it. I'm only warning, because I've seen people over on smallnetbuilder who assume they have 64knvram because they are running fw which enables 64k.
I'll mind my own business.

Does anyone happen to know what the difference between Fractal and KONG builds are?

Can't seem to find a clear feature set/list for either anywhere.

Thanks in advance if anybody knows.

Basically fractals builds are recent dd-wrt builds without extra features.

Kong builds add features that are not in dd-wrt + little enhancements + bugfixes for a certain revision. E.g. I release a build and then keep this revision for a while and add bugfixes before adding updates from svn which break new things.

I have a basic list of differences here:

Hi,

I've been lurking around here for quite some time. I decided to pull the trigger on a RT-N66u! I received the unit last week and just wanted to let you guys know that it came stock with CFE v1.0.1.3

I haven't read anywhere that this would be the case so I was prepared to do the CFE update. I'm sure glad I didn't have to.

Just an FYI for new users or people thinking about this router. As always you should double check to make sure you have the correct version before flashing the device but it sure eliminated some headaches for me.

Thanks for your work guys I absolutely love this router and may have to get another.

you dont need to upgrade your cfe anymore with the new version. it will detect all variants and will create a 64k nvram space for you

9-Apr-2013: It seems more recently manufactured units come pre-loaded with the 64K v1.0.1.3 CFE and so are not compatible with standard DD-WRT builds. Flashing a standard DD-WRT build on these devices will result in a brick. As it is impossible to know which CFE version you unit has when running the stock firmware, anyone wishing to flash DD-WRT on this device is advised to follow this guide: ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????///

I'm thinking about upgrading from my WRT600N and am trying to decide what router to go with.

The wiki page is indeed a little confusing and possibly outdated? Is there still a risk of bricking these routers?

I think the term brick can be a little misleading also. My 600N "bricks" itself every couple months it seems and I have to tftp new firmware onto it, whereupon it becomes a router again. Try doing that with an actual brick why don't you!

So are these recoverable when they brick or are they best used for paperweights?

So the two routers I'm looking at currently are the RT-N16 and the RT-N66U. Any other routers I should consider? I'm going to be running OTRW2 and Asterisk on it and want something stable but powerful.

Looking over the instructions here :
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php?title=Asus_RT-N66U#New_K3.X_Builds

Is says I can flash the mega, it seems to imply over the stock. However further down it says to flash the trx via the web, however that links to a 2.6 mini, and also that link is broken.

Do I start with the 21676 k3 mega? (as there seems to be no k3 mini), use the latest mega (23919), use the 2.6 mini and go to the newest k3 mega.

I know the initial flashes can be tricky, and I really really do not want to brick this. I appreciate the info. Is there an approved way to update the wiki so that perhaps I can add the info I find out?

Flash this first through the asus update page ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2013/05-27-2013-r21676/broadcom_K3X-EXPERIMENTAL/dd-wrt.v24-21676_NEWD-2_K3.x-big-RT-N66U.trx
Then flash this http://www.desipro.de/ddwrt/K3-AC/23900/dd-wrt.v24-K3_AC_OLDD.bin

Reset to factory defaults or telnet erase nvram, reboot. Done.
