I'm sorry but I have read and re-read the Peacock thread (Everything you need to know) and it really is not everything I need to know. It would be uncharitable of me to say the version details are clear as mud, and probably in a few weeks it'll all be quite obvious to me. I've seen the warning about not trusting data in the list of supported devices. I've looked through the Index at ftp://dd-wrt.com/, and I'm even more confused as to which version to download.
I'll be using the browser to access the control panel, so I gather that I need a generic version.
I have a new Linksys WRT54GL version 1.1, and I think all I need is the micro version.
After a lot of rumaging through folders and checking hashes, I ended up at:
but I've seen other v24 mini_generic.bin files in other folders.
Is this the version I should be using.
I'd be grateful for any guidance, and apologies if I sound ungrateful to all those who freely give their time to developing and documenting this project.
Yes, and thanks, I have read and printed off that article and saw the advice to download NEWD_MINI build generic 12548 Eko Build in sub-para 2. I can't quite remember what I read elsewhere that made me doubt if that was what I should do - possibly being unable to find the hash for that file and possibly something I read in the Peacock post.
Do you reckon NEWD_MINI build generic 12548 Eko Build is the right one, then?
That's good to know - very reassuring. Thanks for that.
I think it was in that Peacock Everything-you-need-to-know topic where I read something like: a newer build is not necessarily a better one. I haven't come across any "lists of changes" for DD-WRT builds, so how does the average user of DD-WRT know firstly if a new build for their router comes out, and, secondly, whether or not it's worth installing; in your case, for example, how do you find out whether or not 14929 is a worthwhile upgrade to 12548? And how do you keep aware of updates to a specific router's version of DD-WRT?

Well both builds are RECOMMENDED
I needed /sendmail/ 12548 did not have it, 14929 did. So I upgraded to 14929.
I just read /A LOT/

Thanks, gufus, you're a godsend. "Just read /A LOT". Great advice: it is all slowly coming together and making sense, and by moving a step at a time I'm working my way up the learning curve.
Thanks for your kind advice and for taking the time to help.
