hi all, I just bought one of these: http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=827567
a WRT54GS v4 w/64mb RAM. it is working OK (and FWIW the 64mb RAM persist after hard reset)

but it is emitting a very high pitched squeal! its only noticeable when you have it in your hand (first noticed when doing a 30/30/30 hard reset) its a static like squeal.

Ive had a few WRT54G routers and have never noticed this before, has anyone else ever noticed this on a WRT54G series router?

I just checked the other two I have now and no sounds at all from them so I am concerned and wanted to ask here about it.

I turned the radio off and it still squeals.

any ideas? thanks

My old WRT54GL squeals.

It also sometimes randomly rebooted when people were connected to it and actively using bandwidth.

Could be related but I've never bothered to debug it. (Was used as an AP at a remote location).

hmmm.. I'll leave it on and keep it working to see if it reboots.

anyone else noticed any sounds from a WRT54G? I need to decide if I should return this one or not prety soon.

thanks

here is a video of one making this sound.

seems a simple fix so I will see if I have the parts needed and give it a shot.

edit: and BTW the seller refunded but we worked it out so could keep it.

swapped out all four caps.. still squeals! &*^$!

cant tell exactly where it is coming from.. it sounds like the one of the two most rearward facing caps.

this bugs the crap out of me!

My EA6700 squeals loudly when wifi nvram variables are missing.
On linksys forums I've seen suggetions to reset router to default values.

DO NOT 30-30-30 or erase nvram newer routers! It can brick them.

EA6700: Build 27745 (nvram below 32K, ipv6 - HE 6in4)
E4200: Build 26587

I've had the power brick make it squeal before. Try changing it out.

Well.. after watching you video, that is a buzzzzz, not a squeal.

Agreed.. Check the power supply.. make sure it is the right one. I have had router(s) sent to me and the owner(s)were using a 9V AC ps.. it should not have worked even a little but it did. This happened more than once. They should be 12VDC.

You can check your existing ps with a volt meter. Set it for AC (the meter) and check under load. If the meter shows any AC voltage other than a few milli-volts, the rectifier circuit in the power brick is bad. I have seen dc power supplies show 1 ~ 4 volts AC and they were bad.

If all checks out, quiet those chokes down with a little hot glue.

Im using 12vdc 2a supply and using the same one on other WRT54s an no problems there, does it with the OE 1a supply also.

thats just a vid I found on YT but mine is the very close to that same sound, very high pitch like a squeal but yeah it has a bit of a buzz in there too. its constant but fluctuates. turning the radio off or loading the cpu and it still does it.

that might be it! it seems to change its tune slightly when I touch them but I figured it was probably just a field effect or residual deal.

I'll glue them up real good and see what that does. I did replace the caps with the 35v ones while I was at it and then did a quick test on radio output from android and did note notice any improvement but it didnt have any clients or traffic running on it at the time and thats where radio man said it makes the biggest difference. plan to check that out closer at some point.

thanks guys

I thought the video you posted was your video showing the symptoms of your router.

glued them all up and no improvement.

maybe its time for my first fan mod on one of these.. loudest fan I can find to drown it out. on that note, FWIW Ive been running all my WRTs @225ghz with only heat sinks and they have been fast and stable.
