I'm trying to revert my TL-WR841N v8 back to factory. There is no webrevert I can find but I found instructions on how to do it via ssh at:
http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=171026&highlight=wr841n

When I run mtd unfortunately I get:
Erasing mtd failed: linux

I'm afraid if my router reboots now it will brick. Please help!

UPDATE:
Turns out the firmware from tp-link includes a boot loader that must be removed before using mtd (true for all images with "boot" in the name). Too bad I did that on the device and filled up the RAM. BRICK!

Anyone else using the instructions I linked above beware. You need to clip off the front of tp-link "boot" images to get the size to 3,932,160. If your bin is already this size then don't do this.

If you have unix tools you can do:
dd if=orig.bin of=tplink.bin skip=257 bs=512
Where 'orig.bin' is the tp-link "boot" image and 'tplink.bin' is what you will copy to the router for mtd'ing. Don't be stupid like me and do the truncation operation on the router or you too will have a brick.

Hi all,

Downloaded and installed 05-27-2013-r21676/tplink_tl-wr841ndv8/factory-to-ddwrt.bin accidentally, intending to download the latest one 07-24-2013-r22118/tplink_tl-wr841ndv8/factory-to-ddwrt.bin.

It bricked my v8.4 router.

Please, is there a way to unbrick without a serial cable?

Thanks,
Dave

On the page (router database) for Version 8.1 it says:
Quote:
Requires tl-wr841ndv8 build

Can I directly flash this image over the factory image? There's no factory-to-ddwrt on the Version 8.1 page - is it not required? Thanks!

Edit: Sorry, my fault. There a v8 subfolder, not directly a v8 file Wink

does this work on tp-link tl-wr841d v8.2 and if it does, does the repeater work on it?

So, thanks to help from various places here and also on the Open-WRT forum I unbricked it, for a total outlay of about 2.50GBP and learned a few things along the way too. Now it's running the right DD-WRT with all the amazing features. One tip, try blutack if you don't have the requisite soldering skills! FWIW the USB TTL device I used was a CP2102 and it worked great with no garbled terminal output.

Hi guys,
My wr841nd ver 8.1 is bricked, to make things worst the TX line on JP1 is not working, pin is turning and there are no signal in this pin. Are there other points that can give TX and RX to try serial comunication? I believe that in chipset it is possible but I'm not very good with iron soldering, I needed another easy point to solder.
Sorry my bad english.

Yes. I flashed my tl-wr841nd with 07-24-2013-r22118 with out any issues. I have not tried the newer dd-wrt versions yet. I was able to make it a repeater using these directions.
