If the mods don't object, I would like to dedicate this thread as a sort of "my notes" repository for the various mods and tests I perform to my Cisco Linksys E4200 v1. That way others (newbs, or not) can learn from my trials and tribulations. If this is a problem please just lock the thread now and I will understand.
Running as EE unregulated internet access WIFI so that users can pound on it for a few weeks.
Performed TTL Mod due to some internet providors changing their TTL to 1 thus not allowing packets to forward through your router (and the packets simply die in the router):
Set the incoming TTL to 10, before the router routes it into the LAN:
iptables -t mangle -I PREROUTING -i `get_wanface` -j TTL --ttl-set 10
Set the outgoing TTL to 128, just as if a Windows machine was connected directly to the modem.:
iptables -t mangle -I POSTROUTING -o `get_wanface` -j TTL --ttl-set 128
Running both of these.
"Save Firewall" so that it will persist through a reboot of the router.
1:25pm> Noticed router dropped LAN connections, and it came back after a minute or two.
The DDWRT WIKI recommends:
"Both the 2.4 and 5GHz Radios run at a stock transmitting power of 100mW, decreasing the transmitting power to a value between 40 & 50mW has seemed to help stability. "
But I am not going to adjust that yet.
3:54pm> Found that my connection had dropped within the last 54 minutes. Reduced both WL0 and WL1 from 100 to 50mw TX power.
6/19/13
3:17pm> WL1 (N radio) seems to be stable at 50mw. Increasing both N and G radios to 75mw and to observe.
6/21/13
75mw Radio setting has been stable.
Would like to flash to a mega build to explore the additional features.
Performed 30/30/30
Shot from the hip and picked "dd-wrt.v24-21402_NEWD-2_K2.6_mega-nv60k.bin" to try. Flashed it.
Waited a few minutes.
Performed 30/30/30.
Configured Settings specific to our network:
IP, username / pwd, WIFI name, WL0: BG Mixed Channel 5, WL1 N-Only 5GHZ, WIFI sec: WPA2 Personal AES (for both), TX power 75mw (for both).
TTL mod (outlined above).
Power-cycled. Backed up config (nvram).
Back in production with 20-25 WIFI user devices such as laptops, iPhones, iPads, android phones, including my laptop with VPN client connected back to company network through this router.
3:05pm
Checked reach of both radios. N radio seems to have less reach than yesterday.
Changed TX power for both radios from 75mw to 100mw.
This seemed to make no difference as far as reach.
6/27/13
This device continues to serve many devices. Very solid device and DDWRT build.
Multiple concurrent IPSEC VPN passthrough sessions have worked fine, along with the other 20-25 WIFI devices accessing it.
It has been rebooted only during power outages. The longest period that it has been on is probably 3 days so far.
I'm purchasing a second E4200 v1!

I have the same router and have tried many different configurations on it. I was just wondering if you were still testing or if you called it quits. One thing though the router seems to perform better with a low tx power rather than raising it as high as it will take. Got this off another thread and seems to be the case. _________________ E4200 w/ mega build 23838
