Guys,
This is a strange one..
Can some one with a N router + N capable android phone do the bellow test ?
Open any command line and start pinging your android phone with screen on !
1 - Set android phone to never turn wifi off when screen goes off.
2 - Confirm your using wireless N (65mbps) connection
3 - turn screen off
My ping stops reacting a few seconds later.. hmm what ?
Goto dd-wrt wireless settings and force wireless G and now ping keeps working with screen off..
It can't be ( I said to myself ) so I re-flashed tp-link 1043 original firmware did the same experience and ping works as supposed to with wireless N..
I can't use dd-wrt with wireless N. My phone looses communication.
Maybe Android drops to either a lower power state for wifi or to wireless G when screen is off (low power state)
Install "Wake Lock" for Android, that app keeps the CPU at its lowest frequency instead of deep sleep, then try the tests again, if it works, then its something Android is doing to the wifi in a low power state _________________ TPLINK TL-WR2543ND (5GHz)

DD-WRT does never distinguish what device is connected and does not know when you switch the phone screen on or off. It can't be from the router. Period.

ok..explain why with original tp-link firmwares the phenomenon does not happen then??
like I said, is there any log I can post ? look for ? anything ?

Edit: Or when I stop using wireless N..
Theres something wrong anyway, look at your ping times, they should be next to nothing on local network, I get 10ms ping to online servers for speedtests _________________ TPLINK TL-WR2543ND (5GHz)

I tried some of this out while I had the Galaxy Nexus.. no mater what I did I could not get this problem to replicate on WNDR3700 v1 or DIR-825 B1, but it was running 4.0.4 ICS.. I would suspect its true when its rumored that newer Android OS fixes it but I don't have a Gingerbread(why is most Android users on this still?) device to confirm.. _________________ LATEST FIRMWARE(S)

my ping times are the correct ones for screen off mode !!
I want to revive this thread since I have the same problem with my EVO LTE, only when it's screen turns off it loses connection. Pretty odd problem, worked fine when I had stock firmware too.
I've just flashed my Xoom tablet to JB 4.1.1 and lo, I cannot connect when using EAP (the tablet just won't even bother trying to connect) - but it WILL connect to my HTC phone hotspot using WPA2 (no EAP).
I'm going to try the NG mixed mode you alluded to in your bug thread and see....
I have a similar issue (Evo 4G LTE running CM10 on Android 4.1.1) and I can also confirm that setting the router mode to NG Mixed works. N only does not.
Also I tried Mixed and it worked okay but I find that with NG mixed I have a bit better connection when the screen is off. I still can't find a fix for that. Phone going into deep sleep has nothing to do with it as long as the wi-fi is still enabled and not killed when the screen is off -- which mine isn't.
Oh well the search continues, at least now it's better though.
I think this is a problem with handshaking between dd-wrt and android phones for some versions of dd-wrt firmware.
If you don't want to waste time hunting down the right version of dd-wrt to use, just spend $47 ($67 with $20 rebate ending this month) for the Buffalo (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833162031&Tpk=wzr-hp-g300nh).
I can confirm their latest dd-wrt firmware (19154) fixed this problem.
