I am a very satisfied user of DD-WRT on my Buffalo WHR-G125 for many years and helped numerous others setup their routers on DD-WRT. When it comes time to upgrade my own router, I naturally picked one that is DD-WRT capable.

So I picked up a TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND. Using the stock firmware, I am able to go online via PPPoE. I then flashed DD-WRT on it, but PPPoE refuses to connect. I tried using DHCP and plug the new router to my G125, and it still doesn't work as if the WAN port is not active.

Here are some details:
Hardware version: 1.8
DD-WRT version tried: 14896 (2010-08-09), 19342 (2012-06-0Cool
OpenWRT version tried: Backfire 10.03.1 (not that I want to use OpenWRT, but just to test)
Tried 30/30/30 hard reset

All with same results - PPPoE / DHCP both failed

Sicne the stock firmware works, I am inclined to believe it is a software issue rather than hardware. Do you guys have any suggestion on how I can resolve this problem? I would really hate to use stock firmware since I have grown addicted to DD-WRT.

Thanks!

Did you run the micro flash BEFORE the main flash? (as per the router DB instructions?)

I've had no problems with 18777 on my two 1.8 boxes, except the assign WAN port to switch and remote CIFS mounts not working.

Sorry, did you mean flashing the "Special image for initial flashing" and then the "Webflash image" again?

Yes I used the "Special image for initial flashing" to load DD-WRT from stock. I think I used "Webflash image" as well to further upgrade to latest build but I am not 100% sure so I will try tonight.

I know DD-WRT has worked well for many others on this router so I am dying to know what did I miss.

Again since it works with stock firmware, I can't blame hardware failure Sad

Yes, that.
I can only suggest the 30-30-30 reset then.

I tried that multiple times in vain. Last night I finally went to the store to exchange the unit.

I got a HW version 1.9 unit back instead because thats all they have. Not sure if DD-WRT works on it.

I tried DD-WRT on this v1.9 unit just now. Unfortunately, the same problem persists.

I start to wonder whether there is any subtle hardware changes that caused this incompatibility. I noticed that in the OpenWRT forum someone else reported the exact same issue (without a solution) so I am not alone.

Tell me if there is a way for me to help you help me.

Last solution seemed dubious, why can't we just download the latest firmware from the official distribution repos? some .ru website? Have anyone tried that?

After updated my TP-Link WR1043nd v.1.8 router ( from ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2012/03-19-12-r18777/tplink_tl-wr1043nd/ ), router's WAN stopped working.

I wonder it's safe to download the latest firmware to to replace the 03-19-12-r18777 distro.

Can I perform the firmware update from the web interface?

Thanks,

Vincent

I've had the same problem with the same router with every dd-wrt version newer than build 14929 - if that helps with the diagnosis.

I have tried at least 10 different later builds up to 18777, including using 30-30-30 resets, re-flashing to stock before applying the new build, and all troubleshooting recommended on this forum - but never got the WAN to connect.
Once I flash back to 14929, it works again. So my suspicion is that something was introduced shortly thereafter which messes up things for a small sub-community of users of this router.

So I'm stuck with this by now 2yr old FW version - any Idea why that is?

Thanks

Nansen: can you let me know the steps you took to upgrade your WR1043ND router?

I have 2 units of WR1043ND rev1.8, 1 bought last year, and another just a few days ago. I have no problems installing r14896 but when I install the same dd-wrt firmware r14896 on this new router, the WAN port remained disconnected. I tried to install lower releases, like 14280 and 14311, and it does not work - WAN port remained disconnected.

really appreciate any help!

[update]
I found out that for TL-WR1043ND rev1.8, if the S/N is 11XXXXXXXXX, flashing with r14896 will work (WAN port will work). but if the S/N is 12XXXXXXXXX, flashing any dd-wrt firmware (even r14896) will not work (WAN port appears to be disconnected).

then the best possible thing you may do is to open the router and make a good photo of its board so that we see if there is some difference between 'newer' and 'older'.

In fact I should add that I've been sailing under the wrong flag - my router is actually older and not V. 1.8 but V 1.4 instead, with the Serial number starting with 09C.

However the problem remains the same, any dd-wrt version newer than 14929 cuts off WAN access, i.e. no internet via the router ...
