I’m planning to do the permanent serial port mod on a La Fonera next week, and I’m gathering some information. I’m not home till the weekend and I don’t have any tools to open up the fonera to check myself, so some question are kind stupid.
1) Has anyone done this mod with a MAX233 chip before? It seems like a simpler solution, without having to stuff any caps in the router – it seems tight in there.

2) What is volt is the VCC pin? 3.3V or 5V? I’m thinking if it is 3.3V, why don’t I tap power from the DC in port? It should have the full 5V from the power brick to power the MAX233/MAX232 right?

3) From what I hear, the fon would not boot if the TX pin is connected. So It’s likely not too boot after I solder the TX pin to the MAX233 chip. Can I get away by adding a on-off switch between the TX and the MAX233?

ok i did the serial mod to my fon. but i used a ds276 chip instead of the max232 (u dont need resistors) i also have not had any problems with the tx that people have been saying. if you check out teamhackday.com and check out there forums, go to the computer and tech section, i wrote towards the end of the topic, a diagram using the chip i used. any more questions feel free.
