This is a simple noob question. I've been searching and reading, by the way.
I'm using a WRT350N.
I want to use the USB for two things; storage and jffs/optware/swap for torrenting. Does the swap space need to be on a solid state device (flash drive of SD card)?
Can I use a single mechanical drive for swap space, optware/samba as well as network storage, or do I need to use a usb hub and have two devices?
You can use either flash or a hardrive for all those just create different partions for each thing; ie opt ware/swap/storage. Please note, using a USB drive for swap will wear it out much quicker as it can only be written/erased a certain number of times which varies based on the device and how much your router hits swap. _________________ --------------------------------

Thanks for the reply. That's what I thought but I wanted to make sure. I was concerned that the HDD wouldn't be as fast as a USB flash drive, but now that I think of it the USB 2.0 connection will be the limiting factor anyway. I hope the poor router won't have to hit the swap partition much! (it has 32MB, should be ok)
So if i were to use a usb stick that would be okay for this? and when u say it will wear it out quicker...are we talking like within a month or something? or quicker as in like a 6months to a couple years? and i was also thinking about not using a usb thumb drive and just using a seperate partition on my external HD. What do you think of that?

Swap is always better if it's on a hard drive v.s. flash memory.
No one can answer your question about how long flash memory will last with swap running on it.
1) it depends on the read/write cycles of the flash device. They are all different.
2) How intense is swap being used by your system? Linux prefers not to use swap but what your doing on the system decides. I might not use swap on my setup as often as you do. So it would last longer for me. I've been told that for some people, it's only lasted a month.
