I bought WR840N when I was in China this May because their Hotels do not have WIFI Access and I was unlucky to had only an iPAD instead of laptop when I was there.

Now, I want to flash DD-WRT onto this WR840N wifi router. This WR840N is hardware compatible with WR841N which DD-WRT is supported.

Directly, WR840N does not accept non-WR840N firmware. Many Chinese would use a "hack serial cable" to force TFTP the firmware; or modify WR841N firmware by masking it with WR840N firmware headers then flashing it; before flashing DD-WRT.

I have no clue/idea on how to mask WR841N firmware acceptable for a WR840N. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Compatible with which version of the WR841N?
The 841N is available in 2 different Atheros platforms.

I can fix the header for you so the dd-wrt firmware works on the 840N but you'll have to tell me which 841 version I should do the fix on.

Your WR840N must be of hardware version 1.x, version 2.x has only 2MB flash and can not run dd-wrt.

I have WR840N v1.1. According to some chinese forum it is hardware compatible with WR841N v7.

Here is link at openWRT describing WR840N chipset vs WR841N v7:
https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?pid=119847#p119847
(The original post in chinese http://www.right.com.cn/forum/thread-41697-1-1.html
"...Summarize, WR840N the basic configuration is the ATHEROS AR7241 + AR9287, 32MB RAM, 4MB FLASH. I have not used the 841N, do not know how to heat it on my own trial 840N situation, the heat is really low. I am not aware of these chips, such as the AR7241 AR7240 than what improvements, AR9287, what features, please let me know friends or tell me where to find information on these chips.")

Installing OpenWRT onto WR840N via tftp (using serial?)

Here is link to a chinese sailor's attempt at flashing DD-WRT onto his WR840N: http://www.anywlan.com/bbs/thread-93185-1-1.html

I hope this helps!

Now testing DD-WRT v24-sp2 (04/13/11) std - build 16785 (firmware based on WR841N v7) on WR840N v1.1 .

Flashed without any problem.

Default WR840N firmware crashes within 48hrs. Must be leaky memory management or something screwy within. Now with DD-WRT firmware, will post updates (bugs, stability, etc) on how this is doing.

So far so good. Sweet!

About 90 minutes ago, the router mysteriously became "invisible" to my wireless devices; none could find the SSID and could not connect. I am not aware when was the exact time this occured today as I was away from home the whole day today. I had to restart the router to recover.

This occurs regularly (within 48hrs) when it was running on native firmware. It now occured for the very first time running on DD-WRT.

The router was configured with WDS/Connection Watchdog checking on IP Address "8.8.8.8" every 300seconds. I was hoping that should prevent it from loosing connection. Now I added to scheduled reboot itself @ 4:00AM everyday to prevent any crashes due to memory leak.
