This router definitely needs some DD-WRT love...the GUi on this bad boy is a beast...it really sucks! I could see that DD-WRT would be the last link to make it a notably great router...up there with the very best!
My main issue currently with it is the dang wireless config...confusing as hell!
Yes it takes a little getting used to but I do like the router and can live with the factory firmware for now. It would be great to get DD-WRT working.
I may be able to provide some of the information LOM asked about in a day or so. Need to get the serial port installed on my other router (non-bricked one) first.

Oh yeah...this router is great, if not for the goofy gui on it. Got everything going, but it just seemed every option wasn't where you would think it would be. Might just be that I am use to the DD-WRT gui, which is organized in a way that options are where they should be. You have to wonder about what was going through some of these designers/programmers heads when they laid it out. As with the GUI...you use the same drop down to set up each band...took me awhile to figure that out and then it wasn't finished...another tab to finish it. Unlike DD-WRT where everything is laid out in front of you and together...hehe...they hid all that in the 9850.
I appreciate your efforts and hate that you 86'd one of your routers. I actually bought this unit during a sale and got it for under 50 bucks at newegg. I will gladly be a guinea pig to test the unit, whenever. All about the greater good right?

I did not intend to brick the router. Just did a couple of dumb things that led up to it.
The router that I bricked was actually my old one that had been in service for several months not the new one that I just received. That made me feel a little better
OK, I have the serial port working on my other ESR-9850 and have just flashed DD-WRT ESR-9752 Build 14896 to it.
DD-WRT is working, I can login as root using Putty on the serial port.
The Gigabit switch does not work which is not a surprise, however wireless does work. I was able to access the web interface at 192.168.1.1 using wireless.
I changed the username and password, changed the LAN IP Address under Setup (my wireless adapter got the new address via DHCP), changed the Wireless SSID from default and changed wireless security to WPA2, PSK (had to reconnect a couple of times to do that).
Even though the LAN and WAN ports do not work the LEDs work. They flash with traffic and go on/off when a cable is plugged in. This is even after a power down and reboot of the router.
A couple of GPIO items as follows:
GPIO 0 WPS Button 01 when idle – 00 when pushed.
GPIO 10 Reset Button 01 when idle – 00 when pushed
NOTE: Holding the Reset button in for a long period of time does not cause the router to reset. (I don't think it is working on the ESR-9752 either).
GPIO 8 Disable – turns off Power LED
Enable – turns on Power LED
NOTE: The router started complaining about these items after a power down and reboot.

With DD-WRT running on my ESR-9850 and connected to the web interface using wireless I am seeing traffic on the Bandwith Monitor for LAN, WAN and WLAN.
The traffic follows a cable being plugged in to any of the LAN ports. It jumps up past 100 Kbps, down to 50 Kbps and then to around 20 Kbps. When I disable the Wired Network Adaper on my PC it drops to nothing and then jumps back up to 150 Kbps, 100 Kbps, 50 Kbps and then stays around 50 Kbps or less.
I do not get an IP Address via DHCP for my Wired Network Adapter and if I assign a fixed IP Address to my Wired Network Adapter it sends packets to the LAN but there are no packets received back from the LAN. The LAN Bandwith Monitor does appear to see traffic that may correspond to my Network Adapter being manually disabled and enabled.
Not totally sure but the LAN ports may be accepting traffic but not sending any.

Additional Testing of DD-WRT on my ESR-9850 using firmware.bin for the ESR-9852 Build 14896
Still connected to the web interface using wireless connection since the WAN and LAN ports are not working.
I assigned a Virtual Interface, broadcast the SSID and used WPA2, AES and WPA Shared Key. This then became my wireless connection to the DD-WRT ESR-9850 router.
I then changed the Physical Interface to Bridged Repeater, SSID of my main router in next room, channel 10 which is my main router's wireless channel, WPA2 Personal, AES and same WPA Shared Key that my main router uses.
Changed Local IP Address to the same subnet as my main router and set it to be a DHCP forwarder to my main router.
Somewhere along the way I gave my PC's wireless adapter a fixed address in the same subnet as my main router to stay connected to the test router that is now a Wireless Bridge. Once everything was working I changed my PCs wireless adapter back to DHCP and it gets an IP Address out of my main router by way of the DD-WRT ESR-9850 router.
It works, now connected to the internet via wireless to my test ESR-9850 running DD-WRT which is connected to my main router in next room via wireless.
Long winded I know but it proves that some if not all of DD-WRT features can work on the ESR-9850.
At this point if the WAN and LAN ports were working it would might be a go on everything. I do not possess the skills to fix the WAN and LAN but am willing to test anything requested.

Noticed a couple more things about my ESR-9850 running DD-WRT ESR-9752 Build 14896 firmware.
I accidentally had the WPS Button (GPIO 0) pushed (it is on top left) while holding the router and it did a hard reset. Confirmed this a couple more times and it does a hard reset after about 10 seconds. Since the Reset Button (GPIO 10) does not work I think they may be reversed in firmware.
The gigabit switch appears to be an independent switch that does not require the CPU. All four LAN ports ( which are not communicating with the CPU at this time) pass traffic between each other (but not to DD-WRT). I plugged the ethernet cable running from my main router into a LAN port and a second ethernet cable from another LAN port to my PC. Traffic from the internet was passed to my PC. This worked on all of the LAN ports.
The WAN port did not pass traffic to any of the LAN ports. Assigning it to the Switch in Setup made no difference. No surprise since that feature is probably related to the switch built into the RT3052.
Flashed my ESR-9850 back to factory firmware since I was out of ideas to test with DD-WRT running.
To flash back to factory firmware you have to first flash a file called ' uImage ' using Option 2 after powering up. Of course this requires the serial port, Putty and Solar Winds TFTP Server.
You will need the two factory firmware files (KNL and APPS) from the Engenius website.
uImage is availabe in the GPL release for ESR-9850 at the Engenius website. I remaned it uImage_esr9850.bin for my purposes.

After changing my PC's ethernet adapter to DHCP from the fixed IP Address used to flash uImage, I received an IP Address from the ESR-9850 in the range of 192.168.0.xxx
Using Firefox I was redirected to a special Recovery Web Interface (not the normal web interface) that is basically a Blue Box with Cancel and Login as the options.
I clicked on Login and the next Recovery Web Interface appeared that gives you the option to Browse and Upload a firmware file.
I browsed to the location of file ESR9850-KNL-V1-1-1-2-90.dlf and clicked on Upload.
