I can also confirm the dbus package is broken. There is nothing wrong with the package, but it does use -PIE -fpie options while compiled and those apperantly are not handled right within binutils before 2.20-3.
The package needs to be recompiled with toolchain with binutils newer then 2.20-3, which I'm trying to do right now. Or maybe recompiled with -PIC -pic(?)...

Update: dbus package works just fine when compiled without -PIE -fpie. And my scanner scans now :)

Update 2: It's probably not the right place or the right way, but I'm attaching the NO-PIE compiled package. Apologies if I'm wrong.

Update 3: 6/16/2010 Uploaded dbus_1.2.16-2_mipsel.ipk.zip - Non PIE compilation of the newer version of dbus. Hope it helps.
Don't forget dbus-uuidgen --ensure to configure a machine id. Also 'service dbus start' will look for /opt/var/run/dbus/pid and if exists will NOT start the dbus. Make sure it is not running and delete the the pid file before starting.

firmware: DD-WRT v24-sp2 (10/10/09) mini-usb-ftp (SVN revision 13064)

Code:
gdb cupsd
GNU gdb 6.5
Copyright (C) 2006 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
GDB is free software, covered by the GNU General Public License, and you are
welcome to change it and/or distribute copies of it under certain conditions.

This GDB was configured as "mipsel-linux-uclibc"...(no debugging symbols found)
Using host libthread_db library "/mnt/opt/lib/libthread_db.so.1".

(gdb) run
Starting program: /opt/sbin/cupsd

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
0x2aaa9228 in ?? ()
(gdb) bt
#0  0x2aaa9228 in ?? ()
warning: GDB can't find the start of the function at 0x2aaa9228.

    GDB is unable to find the start of the function at 0x2aaa9228
and thus can't determine the size of that function's stack frame.
This means that GDB may be unable to access that stack frame, or
the frames below it.
    This problem is most likely caused by an invalid program counter or
stack pointer.
    However, if you think GDB should simply search farther back
from 0x2aaa9228 for code which looks like the beginning of a
function, you can increase the range of the search using the `set
heuristic-fence-post' command.

Previous frame identical to this frame (corrupt stack?)
(gdb) cont
Continuing.

Program terminated with signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
The program no longer exists.
(gdb) bt
No stack.

Vlado,

Just wanted to let you know you're a great person. Your version of DBUS also unbreaks Avahi. Now if I can just get netatalk to work I'll be happy.

Thanks for unintentionally helping!

NTP doesn't work, as mentioned in this thread. The error is:

Code:
./../lib/isc/unix/ifiter_ioctl.c:454: INSIST(iter->pos < (unsigned int) iter->ifc.ifc_len) failed

Thanks! This is great. As mbus is required by avahi, installing this allows to run avahi on dd-wrt.

And, once avahi is running correctly, it is possible to use dd-wrt as an iTunes media server with the mt-daapd (firefly). ( I tried to use firefly without avahi, normally that should work as well as it includes mDNS in theory, but in practice if you install it with "ipkg-opt install mt-daapd" then the service does not appear in remote iTunes workstations - i.e. the mDNS does not work.)

bind/named has the same error.

I got a similar error from dbus when starting vlc. I tried the altered version of dbus to no avail. So I decided to rtfm and found the command

Code:
dbus-uuidgen --ensure

which set up the machine-id file which was not found on the system. Then vlc ran correctly after that. Maybe this will help.

@vlado and Luke of lweerts1@juno.com
Thank you both for updates and info.
As a matter of fact I gave up on loading vlc on dd-wrt, but dbus seems to be running.

Currently I am "fighting" with cupsd segmentation fault:
cups v 1.4.4-1 of 21-Jun-2010.
root@MyRouter:~# strace cupsd
execve("/opt/sbin/cupsd", ["cupsd"], [/* 11 vars */]) = 0
old_mmap(NULL, 20, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x2aaae000
--- SIGSEGV (Segmentation fault) @ 0 (0) ---
+++ killed by SIGSEGV +++
Segmentation fault

I saw similar post above by qdiesel and separate post in dd-wrt .
My system: wrt610Nv1 DD-WRT v24-sp2 (05/31/10) big - build 14536M NEWD-2 K2.6 Eko and all the most updated optware packages (upgrading very frequently).
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance
P-B

I have a Asus RT-N16 and I used ipkg-opt to install cups and I also get seg faults.

I used the K26 build named "dd-wrt.v24-14929_NEWD-2_K2.6_big.bin" (per the "optware the right way" wiki page)

@midenok
The newest cups version: 1.4.4-2 still segfaults (Nov-02-2010).
I am not sure how to apply above patches. Could you hint steps what to do on /opt, while ipks are already installed.
Thanks in advance

A working CUPS ipkg will be great! I can confirm that the latest version seg faults.
