i'd really like to flash to dd-wrt, but i just can't bring myself to do it, because i've read too much about the WRT54GS's bricking after the 30-30-30 reset after flashing, and i cannot afford to brick this router

has anyone done it with this version of the router, and were you successful? and any tips for me?

Hi!

I was afraid with the reset procedure too and I did it my way...
I have it done with v24 on WRT54GS v1.1 without 30/30/30 proces, simply before new flashing, log into old version of dd-wrt firmware, do a factory reset then flash new dd-wrt firmware and do factory reset again... Worked for me with 3 different devices and now all of them working fine...

Note 1 of the peacock announcement tells you a link to a modified CFE that you can use to fix the bricking problem caused by the faulty stock CFE.

I bricked my WRT54GS v2 (CGN3) and JTAG recovered the unit, the peacock thread provides links to the solution path and there are CFE binaries with the boot link value patched and it does fix the 30/30/30 reset problem. You can download the CFE without JTAG and use a hex editor (eg PSPAD) to look for the problem value.

For windows you will need Putty and WinSCP to extract the CFE from your WRT54GS. To put a patched CFE back I used the JTAG method and TJTAG software located on dd-wrt to transfer the flash image back. The hard part is getting a JTAG connector and parallel cable working. The JTAG header on the WRT54GS is very well heat sinked by the pcboard ground plane.

Yes, I finally did it with DD-WRT v24 05/20/08 std @ WRT54GS v1.1 accordig to simple one&only 30sec reset sequence (as Mordak suggested in topic#45024) while router was powered on. After reset router reqeusted to change the admin and password settings and the router was ready for flashing! Flashig was successfull and I did again Mordak reset and voila, new DD-WRT v24 preSP2 (13064) firmware was on my WRT54GS v1.1 requesting me to change the admin and password settings!
