Router's have weak processors and vpn requires some cpu intense encryption. One of the openvpn guides has performance numbers around 300KB/s but that's not pptp. Perhaps if you followed the new forum guidelines (post builds and hardware!) you could get better answers.

was using microsoft vpn on other end without encryption even required.. no releveant errors in syslog ie..
