I have 2 completely dead wrt54g v8.2's and one wrt54g v5 that is working fine. I was wondering could I take the antennas from the dead 8.2's and case mod and solder the other antennas into the v5. Would I gain anything or just mess up the v5.

No you would not Gain nothing but new holes in your router
Just replace the antennas on it with some Good 16dbi antennas
Look on ebay you can find them low as $12.99 Eatch

I've always liked this tutorial. It describes how to make your own High gain antenna...although it only gains you about 2-3dB over the stock antenna...but it's free (pretty much)

old post i know, but i just wanted to share a little tid-bit.

i had my doubts to say the very least on this, but i tried it out and to my surprise, i got precisely the results that were claimed. very impressive for a place offering antenna designs totally free, and the material cost is basically nothing.

I have used the windsurfer templet from Freeantennas.com and increased my range by 75 feet with a 84TX rating on my WRT54g v5 with stock antennas..

Use that templet with a 9db gain and you should have a good wireless signal..

Never had good success with the instructibles idea so each to there own..

stay away from those 16dBi antennas.. they are junk.

Stick with 9dBi. They are much more reliable.

I get about 2x the range with my cheap 9dBi antennas than I did with any one of the 5 16dBi antennas I bought.
