my active ip connections thing is CONSTANTLY going, it even went up to 4096 which is the max. when i watch it, it is CONSTANTLy rising and rising until it hits the max and my router's connection dies and has to reboot. ive tried downgradding, restoring factory defaults, virus checks, bringin in my friend's laptop with all my home pc's off and it still keeps going up and up. it is EXTREMELY frustrating that my internet keeps dying... can someone please help a little 15 year old out? :]

Well personally, when that issue happens on mynetwork at home, there is only one culprit. File Sharing apps. Specifically Shareaza in this case. My jackass room mate believes that downloading 47 files at a time is perfectly reasonable. I can change the IP, and it goes down, for like a minute or so. You could try using rflow to see exactly where all these connections are coming from/going to. Also maybe try changing the ip connection time outs to something lower. Also you may be able to change your ip address. ( If you are using DSL like me, a simple disconnect and reconnect from the status tab does the trick for me )

Now as far as my situation goes, so far what I have been able to do is limit bandwidth by port. Which does nothing for the connections situation. I just turned on the filtering in Access Restrictions panel. Which managed to knock it down to like 2700 or so connections.

So, figure out where those connections are coming from and you will have a good start.

???) Anyone else out there, Is there a way to limit ip connections on a port by port basis?

Stop sharing pr0n/music/whatever on P2P networks and fix your SOFTWARE settings. It's NOT the routers fault that you want to open 4000 connections at the same time.

Disable torrent/emule software, scan your box for viruses.

Lock down your internet access... If it's your internet: they should obey your rules.

If that doesn't work: Only allow port 53 udp (DNS) port 80,443 tcp (http(s)).

Regards,
Ruud

i have not downloaded anything with any p2p software, i have a forum that gives me DIRECT download links so it is not a torrent or kazaa or something.. regarding rkloost's idea about setting up "Only allow port 53 udp (DNS) port 80,443 tcp (http(s)). " how do i do this?

ALSO, i have it set at default settings so it is set at 512 .. i only made it 4096 to see if it keeps going up

thanks

couple of questions:

what version of dd-wrt?
what router do you have?
in what rate does it increase?
how many users do you have?

i think most of your open connections are dead connections, maybe from a misconfigured host. try to see something on your workstation with netstat -n (in windows: start->execute->cmd and enter netstat -n)

what you can do is set the timeouts on 300 (or maybe 120), it should apply on dead connections only anyway.

I think I have the same problem....

the Active IP just increase and after while the connection freezes.

so at the moment I am doing some test, like:

Ports: from 512 to 1024
timeout tcp and udp: from 3600 to 1800

and it seems working so far...

I will keep my eye on it... and let you know what I found out...

what router do you have?
-- Linksys WRT54GS v5

in what rate does it increase?
-- Increases are diff about 5 - 7 each second

how many users do you have?

only have 2 computers even with NO internet plugged in , IE removing connection to router, ip connections still go up.

what version of dd-wrt?
--DD-WRT v23 SP2 (09/15/06) micro
-> DD-WRT v23 SP2 (09/15/06) stand

what router do you have?
-- Linksys WRT54GS v5
->Linksys WRT54G

in what rate does it increase?
-- Increases are diff about 5 - 7 each second
-> It used to increased very fast...

I have 3 clients, Emule and Azureus connected, and now it works perfectly after those changes.

just set from 512 to 2048 total of Active Ip's
and 1800 sec for timeout....

after this... my connection stays at 45% to 60% of Actives IP.

Have you though anything about virus??? because if you dont any P2P installed, it could be something like this...

doesn't matter if you have internet connected or not, you still may have a virus trying to connect to LOTS of other IP's.
