I don't know if this has been put out there before. What's your favorite build size and does the build size really matter? For example the router that can handle a mega build. Does it affect the router in any "technical" negative way by using the mega build? Or does putting a mini build on that device give the router more of an edge because less flash memory is used? Maybe it doesn't make a difference one way or another. Of course there are those who say if your not going to use all of or most of the capabilities of the mega build, then load standard or mini. All input will be highly appreciated on the matter. Looking forward to everyone's responses. Very Happy

For the most part it's a negligible topic. Almost everything that's not in mini won't run unless you strictly enable it and the flash space doesn't really matter. If you download every svn build then maybe you want to download as little as needed to save both parties bandwidth but if you think you might want some of the features in the future then go with the bigger build.

My thoughts have always been if you don't need it...load the smallest build possible and still retain the features you require. (with the exception of Micro....neutered models are a completely different subject)

I personally like mini. It runs very well, has little overhead and does 100% of my network requirements. If I needed to use IPv6...I'd then go to Nokiad...if I needed kaid...then I'd go to Std...VPN - use VPN...etc.

FYI....When Eko and I get together and he offers me a test build...first thing I request is mini.

So, it is really a personal preference. Also, it is dependent on the router. If you need VPN and VOIP...your only choice is to get a router that is capable of running mega builds (8M or more of flash)....but I would say that 95% of the users out there do not need everything that mega contains and a smaller build would suffice.

Just because you can load up the largest build...doesn't necessarily mean you should....but you can....its your choice.

Of course...this is just my opinion.

we all know what opinions are like - let me show you mine.

Mega is all well and good if you have a small system. you can try different things out, see what does what and how well.

if you have a pile of routers, set one up with mega and set it aside as a spare. set the rest of the routers up with specialized software; VoIP, VPN, et al.

you get more NVRAM to run scripts in. you don't lose the whole network if one router takes the big vacation. you don't have one poky CPU doing 5 complex tasks affecting the speed of your whole network.

one versatile router if the budget is tight. piles of specialized tools if you hit the jackpot.

So far some pretty good opinions and input, but we all know we can't be the fortunate of having every router under the sun. Eko gives us the versatility that we want in the many combinations he has come up with to please everybody also for older routers. BrainSlayer on the other hand you have to use mega or mini_usb just to get USB capabilities, no in betweens, which might come in handy for some of us. Hey BrainSlayer if you read this or if Eko could get it to him to make USB a standard on MINI and up builds. Personally I do like the mini builds so far the best, but standardizing USB support would be awesome.

Mini on all my routers, all the time. It leaves more room for JFFS2 storage in flash, too. Wink

I was wondering the same thing. Since when does a DD-WRT "ho" take the weekend off?

Oh yeah I forgot to mention Donny. He ALWAYS has something to say.

Anybody know when BS is going to put out another build? I'm greatful to Eko for working so hard to give us something new to test. But BS hasn't put anything out in a good while. Maybe Eko is beating him to the punch every time now.
