EOC-2610 signal range issues

i have activated dd-wrt for my EOC-2610 but I can't seem to get the signal to travel for more than about 200 feet. I have the hope of using an EOC and another modified router to cover a less than 1 mile area (a camping park). Can anyone help as to any settings I need to edit? Do I need an external antenna? I would appreciate any help.
