Hi, I've been trying to use an ASUS WL-520GU/GC as a print server and when I print to it it will reboot. Sometimes I can get it to work when I start p910nd manually on the command line, same exact parameters as the autostart. This firmware works well except for this issue. Any ideas? I was able to get the log exported to a PC and p910nd does get the job but then the router reboots.

That router has only 8 meg ram if I remember correctly. Maybe it is a memory issue. Try loading only the modules needed to get printing support working to see if it will work.

Now I'm trying with v24 RC7 and ipkg packages. Looks like something with usb-ohci.

After wrestling with this for a few days, it seems that using the ehci-hcd kernel module with ohci not loaded works without crashing.

That makes sense because the Asus routers do not have an OHCI chipset. OHCI is there for the Linksys routers.
If I were you I would go back to the USB builds as the drivers are built on the current kernel. The modules for the ipk's are built on an older kernel. Shinji has surfaced again ans is going to work on synching his builds to the current svn source.

Still getting the crash. I'm using only ehci-hcd.o and not uhci.o or ohci.o

I'm using the firmware provided in this thread. Does anyone else have this router? Does it work for you?

I'd really like to get more information from the router, but I can't because it crashes.

The modules that are loading probably are correct for your router. The code below is from cascades usb firmware for an asus wl500gp.
Code:

#!/bin/sh
insmod /lib/modules/2.4.30/usbcore.o
insmod /lib/modules/2.4.30/ehci-hcd.o
insmod /lib/modules/2.4.30/scsi_mod.o
insmod /lib/modules/2.4.30/usb-storage.o
insmod /lib/modules/2.4.30/sd_mod.o

As you can see he is not loading uhci, or ohci. This should be exactly the way the firmware that I posted is loading modules. Unless of course you check the uhci or ohci. Do an lsmod to make sure. I have a Lynksys and have to load the ohci for some devices. I have not seen your model yet to be able to give it a test.

First sorry for the long absence. I personally haven't gotten much further with this issue. I've set up the printer to be IP based, and can send it a test page. This basically locks up the printer. It starts to print, but never finishes printing the test page. Any ideas on what to try?

I would try to see if your printer likes the p910nd daemon loaded without its bi-directional support. You can disable p910nd in the webui of the firmware and in a telnet session issue the command:
/sbin/p910nd -f /dev/usb/lp0 0

See how this works.

bkmo,

What are the steps I should take to try your last suggestion? I've done these:

Tried disabling the p910nd driver from the GUI and loaded the p910nd via telnet using the command you gave below. dmesg at that point did not recognize the printer.. Tried to do a test print.. no go.. cycled printer power. dmesg still did not recognize the printer. test print once again a no go.

I then enabled the p910nd driver via the GUI and rebooted the router. At that point the printer was recognized. No luck on the test print however. Tried to load the p910nd driver via your command and tried again. still no luck.

I'm probably missing something obvious, but can you list out the steps that should work?

Thanks

You must not be enabling the printer driver. You have to enable printer support and uncheck p910nd. Then load p910nd from the command line.

I just updated my settings. In the services UI I have the following:

After that I rebooting the router..

Next I loaded the p9100d. I had a print job queued that immediately started to print, but after about 1 inch printed everything stopped and the printer just flashes.

Any ideas?

P910ND is a non-spooling print daemon. There is no guarantee that it will even work with your printer. Try sending a small text file to the printer to see if that works. It may be that the job is too big, and without spooling the printer can't handle it. Cups is a better system for printing, but it uses more memory, and is too big to put in the firmware. Also it looks like you have an Asus router. I doubt it has an OHCI controller. Try disabling USB 1.1 OHCI module in the webui.

I updated to disable OHCI support and then tried to print a small text document that worked fine.

Trying to print the windows XP test page failed as usual.

Anything else I can try? Or can I only print small documents with this setup?

Thanks

Looks like maybe the answer to your question is YES. P910nd does not spool to a printer, but sends all the data at once. It seems to me that your printer cannot handle all the data at once when you send a test page. I am not using my router with a printer attached, so I don't know if it works for me or not. Did the Asus firmware have printer support?

bkmo,

I've installed your firmware on my wl500gp and it's running great! I've only tried the printserver as I don't need the disk share stuff. It's a pitty it isn't upgraded to the latest RC7 release (9433 or similar), but it's working just fine for the last 24hrs.
