I have dd-wrt v23 sp1 running on my WRT54GL. In the built-in dd-wrt help regarding xmit power it says "A safe increase of up to 70 would be suitable for most users." Does this mean a setting of 70 mW or an increase of 70mW over stock, to 98mW?

I believe it means a setting of 70 mW.

But I have found a more reliable connection around 50 or 60.

You'd realy have to mess with it to see what is best for you.
