Then you will be the first to report Smile

it is a router with DHD bus for wifi, not the most popular.

But let us know how it works and please post in the build threads

See the forum guidelines with helpful pointers about how to research your router, where and what firmware to download, where and how to post and many other helpful tips:
https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=324087

I still have a lot of those older Broadcom routers which still work very well but none with DHD bus.

There also is an experimental firmware with opensource wireless drivers

If you can find cheep Netgear, R7800 or XR500 Qualcom/Atheros based units...
on ebay/amazon...they are cheap...and less hassle...than Broadcom based Asus..with Quantenna that is not supported...

well..kind of... https://wikidevi.wi-cat.ru/ASUS_RT-AC87U ....Cool

Netgear R7000 or XR300 routers...are using same SoC and same CPU speed, as your Asus...but a touch better than...Asus...

Both are also cheap...but Broadcom based units... Cool..

Or any modern AX, DDWRT supported router, that you can afford. Cool

Nope, not all Netgear routers are Broadcom....just few...you can do a research...
they have Quallcom/Atheros as well Mediatek chip-sets too..and yes Netgear router have a TFTP
server so its easy to unbrick..they also support nmrpflash

https://github.com/jclehner/nmrpflash

Its not called CFE server but TFTP...and yes they all support either TFTP or nmrpflash...
I would concentrate on Quallcom/Atheros units as they are more stable...especially R7800 or XR 500

Network mode for 5 Ghz radio should be e.g. AC/N , fixed channel 36 upper upper

See: https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=327595 especially scroll to the bottom

Not sure if those are still the best, I do not use TurboQam and I do not use Airtime fairness
