I might build my own router out of an old PC using OPNsense. But it doesn't look like OPNsense does wireguard. They don't mention it.

Thanks. I didn't see it mentioned on one of their pages that described the features - only OpenVPN and some other legacy encryption.

The DL-WRX36 well has long since dried up. Not available on Amazon (you can try all variations of .uk, et al and that's a big NOPE), NewEgg maybe (don't hold your breath), and MFR website points to Amazon. You'd almost be better off with the similar-hardware Asus or Buffalo models or the more recently supported MX8500.

I need something compatible with my existing WDS network of R9000/R7800 routers. I'm not interested in doing mesh networking and it seems that there isn't a "slam-dunk" way to get a mesh network up and running with dd-wrt yet.

I have a spare R9000 and it's just as unreliable. I've been looking at other routers but I haven't found any that are high performance routers that can be flashed with dd-wrt. Websites that report the best routers for 2025 are all lower performing than the R9000 but may be OK and more stable.

The MX8500 is not outdated, supports 6E wifi (tri-band) and supports up to 5Gb on the WAN port. Up to 2208mhz quad core CPU and 1GB RAM (512 flash). It's recently supported and working very well. Plus it way easier to flash and maintain than the Dynalink. And the biggest advantage this one has over the R9000, it does not experience any heat issues.

The MR7500 is also very good, but only has 512MB RAM which could be a drawback for some.

The MR7500 wasn't working out for me so I returned it. I don't know what I'll try next. I looked for the MX8500 at Amazon but only found the MX8501, MX8502 and MX8503. I don't see those listed in the supported devices list but maybe they are close enough to the MX8500 to where they could be flashed with dd-wrt?

The 8501-03 are packaging options. 8501 = One router, 8502 = two router kit, 8503 = three router kit. They are all mx8500s with different packaging.

Note added to the dev thread and Wiki (comment in head withheld). The search function isn't broken on Amazon. Read the listings in entire detail.
