I recently changed ISPs and with that came a free eero system from my ISP. It has a 'Gateway eero' and additional downstream eeros that can be wired or wirelessly connected to the 'Gateway eero' creating a mesh system. Before this change in ISP setup, I had multiple routers as APs, one running ddwrt with dnsmasq for my network for all devices and some local wired devices/servers running various other services.

My netgear R7000 has r47581.

Things that work and issues I'm having with just using the eero setup (no ddwrt router involved):
- [ISSUE] eero firewall issues: I can't connect to local services or local devices when using local IPs. Just times out. I can ping devices no problem from linux laptop. For some reason ssh to local machine works but not https or some other non-standard http ports. Strangely iphone connects fine to http on some http servers but not others. My linux laptop does not connect to either (both iphone and linux laptop devices are wireless on same network).
- [WORKS] Eero port forwarding: I have a fqhn.com that points to my and I port forward my port 443 to one of the local devices and this works properly.

In my old setup with ddwrt I had my own local caching dns server which is what I want to use with eero. From what I've read I can't have this setup currently. You can set upr dns server manually but from what I've read this may not totally work https://support.eero.com/hc/en-us/articles/360059988432-Setting-up-custom-DNS-servers-with-eero as all wireless requests will originate from Gateway eero. I have local dns names that I use for local machines that point to the FQHN (no hairpin). From what I've read, you can switch the eero system to Bridge mode and then place your router upstream of the 'Gateway eero' and then use the other downstream eeros as typical APs.

I'm wondering if any dd-wrt users have their network setup with eeros and what they they have encountered good and/or bad. Did you just put them in bridge mode and use your ddwrt router upstream of all eeros as noted above?

Should I just get rid of the eeros and set up routers like I did before?

I also have 2-3 other switches in the mix…another R7000 also, CCTV cameras. NVR…I use the other R7000 as a dumb switch but also use it to test newer releases prior to putting a new version on my G/W as I have had oddities..but more so when I was using openVpN a few years ago

My overall experience with the R7000 and the erro’s is a good one, I previously had another ISP with a broadband servicebut also used that in bridge mode

If your having issues with just the Eeros in stand alone..I.e no R7000…that’s not going to help
The issue that you state maybe to do with the enhanced security items on the eero, you can toggle some of these on or off as a test

Right or wrongly, I have the eeros, providing DHCP for Wi-Fi clients (Wi-Fi disabled on R7000) and also a separate DHCP server for LAN
I also use PBR for selected devices on the LAN with Wireguard

Issues…. Initially….the eeros had some weird behaviour, I suspect post a auto firmware update and I have had to reset them twice over the last 2-3 years, but last 12 months been stable

Eeros have grown on me, I have 2 in mesh mode and live in a cottage with thick walls, I perceived them better than my previous setup, but I suspect as these work in mesh mode, may be more to do with positioning, as the previous setup I was limited to physically cabling

Your DD-wrt version may be outdated now…but not sure if that will improve anything for you
