I'm new to dd-wrt, I bought this router from ebay and I put dd-wrt on it.
It seems to work fine, but occasionally it seems to crash and reboot.
The firmware I have is DD-WRT v3.0-r55209 std (02/27/24)
I first used recovery mode to instal the stock firmware, a fairly old factory stock version, and then upgraded to dd-wrt from the update firmware menu.
It is possible that as this router is 2nd hand there is something wrong it with it, which would be disappointing. However I wonder if I can rule this out by getting access to the logs somehow?
Syslogd and Klogd are both enabled, jffs2 is disabled and I have put a remote server ip in for external logging, but I only have my laptop available for this.
The router's own logs are wiped upon reboot, so there is no useful information there, and there is nothing in the external logging prior to the crash.
I wonder if anyone could advise me on some other steps I might take to resolve or diagnose this. The router has a reasonable amount of traffic running through it, approx 17mbit upload constantly and it operates fine for hours, often 12 hours or more.
I also wonder if it's a power thing, are these routers fickle about their power adapters? Perhaps the adapter needs replacing.

Could be SFE needs to be disabled or configuration issue. Our magic crystal ball cannot determine. Please consider
upgrading to current release as of this post using the dd-wrt-webupgrade.bin, reset and re-configure from scratch.
Also, serial console logs would probably help determine issues.
My strong suspicion is the power adapter of your R7800 router is near the end of its working life.
In 98% of cases of routers behaving unexpectedly like yours have been, invariably, the power adapters.
Please note the rules regarding power adapter replacement. It must have same Voltage, and same or higher Amps.
Should the plug of the power adapter replacement be of different size (i.e. Not of same make and model), simply cut it off and replace it by the one of the existing power adapter. Observe polarity.
This has been a very stable one for me (with SFE turned on) no reboots.
SFE I'm willing to bet is the issue. The release you installed (-r55209 std (02/27/24) ) was one that I had random reboots due to running with SFE turned on.

Good luck.
Agreed. I just replaced the adapter on my primary R7800 for this very reason. Also, the older build you're running did have issues with SFE. All of the August 2024 builds have been stable for me with Shortcut Forwarding Engine set to SFE, but not to any of the NSS options. Strongly suggest a full reconfig as well. _________________ __________________________

Thanks for the responses. After a significant amount of googling I found a topic that mentioned the latest firmwares have been very unstable with this router. Something to do with the kernel changing.
It was suggested to install v3.0-r53562 so I have and we're currently at almost 3 days of uptime!
SFE is still enabled and everything seems good.
So if you get this router, put this firmware on it and you should have a much happier time.

Yeah, that was a long time ago early in the Linux 6.x kernel addition and pre NSS core support. Still a work in progress and some folks are having mixed luck with it. The key thing is to do a full hard reset and reconfigure from scratch after flashing the newer releases to eliminate any changed logic or nvram variable cruft. _________________ "Life is but a fleeting moment, a vapor that vanishes quickly; All is vanity"
