Hi all,

Which of the 2 files do I need to delete DumaOS on XR500 and install dd-wrt?

And is it just install one of the 2 files and then run it. Or is there a special procedure?

https://ftp.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2023/09-08-2023-r53469/netgear-xr500/

Now I've looked through the guide for the XR500, but it looks too complicated for me. Afraid I'll break the router.
Is there something online on net, or here to do it for me remotely ?

its very simple first update using the factory build and than on any update via DDWRT (after) use the web update builds..

you cannot beak this router it has a build in tftp to recover if you bad flashed it...so go for it...
Cool

Right now my Nighthawk Pro Gaming XR500 run firmware 2.3.2.66

First i need to upgrade to the last firmware 2.3.2.130
https://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/XR500/XR500-V2.3.2.130.zip

After that i will go to

https://dd-wrt.com/support/other-downloads/?path=betas%2F2023%2F10-03-2023-r53562%2Fnetgear-xr500

And download this 2 files.

dd-wrt-webupgrade.bin
factory-to-ddwrt.img

I will go in to Nighthawk Pro Gaming XR 500 firmware menu, and load factory-to-ddwrt.img
After that I need to load dd-wrt-webupgrade.bin in from dd-wrt firmware menu.

Is that correct understanding ?

Usually you dont need to upgrade to the last Duma OS firmware...there is a myth that Duma OS prevents
from updating with another firmware but its not true... Razz i dont remember which exactly i had but update went smooth...and yes update with factory firmware directly from the Duma OS interface...
Than its ok to use it, and when new update comes out update with the web-update file directly from the
DDWRT interface...

Not bad to learn how to do TFTP on Netgear routers... https://kb.netgear.com/000059633/How-do-I-upload-firmware-to-my-NETGEAR-router-using-a-TFTP-client-on-Microsoft-Windows

its easy and it always works..in case of... Cool

all builds are here https://download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2024/

you can do either...use the recommended r53562 and than update to last 57834...or just use the factory to ddwrt of 57834 it should be working as it should...
Just bear in mind if update is done and router reboots and goes in boot loop than, this means the router may also have a bad blocks in its flash ram and those are located within the vital flash sectors that may be ok for the stock firmware but, not in the DDWRT and it will not load...so you'd need to go back to stock firmware using TFTP....and its ok and easy... I have tried to load firmware r53562 through Tftpd64, there are no errors.

But the router flashes in all lan ports and lights go out on all ports, and there is light in the one where the lan cable is plugged in and after a few seconds it flashes in all ports again. And so it went round and round. And then nothing more happened, now I've run the original DumaOS again.

Just select 'factory-to-ddwrt.img' from the DumaOS FW update GUI (instead of a NetGear image) & apply. It should reboot into DD-WRT. Use tftp recovery (in this case) only if the router gets stuck in a boot loop.

If boot loop is the case, than it means bad blocks in the flash ram...sadly nothing could be done and you are stacked to use the stock firmware only Duma OS or may be another 3rd party firmware that fits in... there are few others... Cool

Very recently, there was a case like this ..d3m1z https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=336979

Thank you for all the information you all have provided to get DD-WRT on XR500 Wink , i stay on DumaOS

Just one last thing

Will I have the same problems if I buy a Netgear Nighthawk X4S R7800. Or should I look for some other brand ?

R7800 is a great gear..and has great support/compatibility with DDWRT...and its less known for bad block's in flash ram...at least no cases known to me... Cool

Nowadays some AX routers are getting support too and those have decent prices..but despite their functionality, their support is still WIP ...

But lets say it R7800 will still have another few years on the ring... Laughing
