As mentioned in a prior thread, I upgraded the DD-WRT firmware of my ASUS RT-AC88U to DD-WRT v3.0-r53662 (10/16/23). I also reset the router as requested by my VPN provider. This, of course, wiped out my Wi-Fi settings. I am trying to set up Wi-Fi again, but no matter which Wireless Security mode I choose, it rejects my desired password despite it being within the number of characters preferred by DD-WRT. Please help. Also, which Wireless Security mode should I choose? I can't remember which one I used before the reset. Thank you.
if your client is old and supports TKIP..than the problem is your client..or use the less secure TKIP...settings.. _________________ Atheros

I'm on r53714 and I could not set my wifi password after a reset - If I remember correctly the error was 'Password contains ascii signs' or similar meaning like that.
What I did was I set the password on both radios and I could then save the passwords I wanted, setting password on only one radio did not work no matter which one.

If i could ask, what is the point of heaving such a complex password for GUI and log in via http ?
However, if you need a decent WI-Fi pass, than yes you'd need a complex one...
something like this Ns-zE$0Ka+cQ572mps4v-61&2_R9 this will do for both cases..i guess you can find lots of online generators, where you can specify the characters/symbols used... _________________ Atheros

I reset my router again to show you what's going on - you can't actally save a simple or complex password as it wont let you.
When you reset DDWRT passwords are set to 'ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ' automatic so the 'contained illegal ASCII code' error is not about the password I set in these pictures.
I tested this in Brave & Firefox and using private browsing window in Brave&Firefox - it not about browser cache.
Here is a few screenshots for you that explains it - to be able to change password you must change password on both radios to get rid of the 'ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ' - that's what the problem is.
I think this is the same problem threadstarter has as he wrote ' it rejects my desired password despite it being within the number of characters preferred by DD-WRT '

Thank you! Changing the password on both bands did the trick.

i guess, as i dont have such an issue... ÿÿÿ is a symbol that is forced by your system font settings...
Basically somewhere in your OS you ve set some system default font, that interpenetrates
symbol *** as ÿÿÿ and than you have this trouble...i believe...
As i dont have this router to test...it could be very router specific issue, but in your case you solved it...so you can mark the thread as a solved ... _________________ Atheros

I tried it on two different computers and both had the same problem, none of them had any fonts changed and I'm using a Netgear EX6200 and threadstarter is using a ASUS RT-AC88U.
Found this in a log I had from the serial connection using Putty so it's not a browser issue.
