got another EA8500 from eBay few days back
$35.44 shipping included in that price.
Of course I plugged it in soon as I got it make sure it worked...all was good --- still had someones WiFi setup so I hit its reset button. All good just now got around to pop the thing open and WOW it has its header pins and is exactly same as my original EA8500
imma very happy... I'll have DD-WRT on this is few minutes ...just had to share --- some nice things do still happen
yeahuh all is good
I just put the oldass 'r31780M kongat' on both parts via serial
but now it has
DD-WRT v3.0-r52894 std (06/06/23)
Linux 4.9.337 #1977 SMP Tue Jun 6 02:27:35 +07 2023 armv7l
on both parts using the GUI
I see this guy has a hair newer U-Boot version than my original
'serial log'

Hey mricd, nice grab for sure! Love it when everything comes together nicely, at the right price, especially!
I'm planning on pulling the beast I bought thinking it could support DD-WRT at some point, but sadly it never will. It does not support WPA3 with it's firmware and all my work clients do; GT-AC5300. Was thinking of another R7800 or maybe an XR500, but after seeing your post, I thought maybe this model would serve the purpose for my remote work related mesh instead of one of the Netgears. Hard time finding the Netgear and they cost quite a bit still on Amazon when they show up.
I use to buy Linksys all the time before, but had so many issues with their firmeware so moved to Netgear as my main preference. But now that I use DD-WRT, I would get one.
Can you provide any feedback on the WPA3, if that router model can support it with DD-WRT? Do you use it yourself?
EA8500 WPA3 works fine for me here - Dell and HP laptops, Samsung, Sony and Nokia Androids. _________________ ------------------------------------

The older EA8500s with the header are a pretty rare and cool find.
I found my first EA8500 at a thrift store for $10.
It didn't have a header but I managed to solder some wires and thanks to MrJCD I managed to get DD-WRT on it.
I purchased another EA8500 from eBay a year later ($35 shipped), it also had no header and had some tricky obfuscation in the stock firmware that made it more difficult but I managed to get it done too.
I now run OpenWRT on one of them.
Looks like I gotta catch up and get a 3rd one soon, lol.
