Hi,

It's been a while since my last login here. Anyway, I have this router TP-LINK TL-WDR3600 with DD-WRT v3.0-r38581 std (02/06/19) flashed on it. The router is working just fine, but I wonder if it's a good thing flashing this latest version of firmware over mine.

IIRC you have to use CLI to update a version that old on Atheros. I'd first flash to r44715 and from there to newer/newest.

Its not only good but in terms of security its highly recommended..
Other best thing would be if you, update it and than reboot it and later, reset via button (hold it for 8-10 sec) and than once its reset, rebuild your setting manually, do not load save file form different builds...

I know 30/30/30 reset and in fact I'm aware for everything you've said above.

I just don't know anything about the update through command line - CLI - and how to do that procedure.

I'm afraid not to brick my router, that's why I asked about flashing with the latest firmware, despite having an old one installed.

Via telnet/ssh:

Code:
cd /tmp
wget -O firmware.bin http://ftp.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2023/05-27-2023-r52720/tplink_tl-wdr3600v1/tl-wdr3600-webflash.bin  && tail -f /var/log/messages

OR

Code:
cd /tmp
wget http://ftp.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2023/05-27-2023-r52720/tplink_tl-wdr3600v1/tl-wdr3600-webflash.bin
write tl-wdr3600-webflash.bin linux

Either option should tell you if the firmware image is too big to flash, the first option will do it automatically for you and you can watch the process.

do not do those 30/30/30 resets, as this is not for your router this method is very old and obsolete..
i've no idea how to unbrick your router...all TP-link routers usually have TFTP to recover...I used it few times on mine, its not a rocket science...
I haven't seen negative reports about TP-LINK TL-WDR3600 on the recent builds...
last few builds are work in progress...but i keep flashing those on my main routers...52369 was quite of stable... before the big works...but im on the last one (52720) with no issues, according to my set up... Wink

to do CLI update...its nothing special...but you must have enough free ram...
usually log in via telnet or ssh
than

cd /tmp
wget http://download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2023/05-27-2023-r52720/tplink_tl-wdr3600v1/tl-wdr3600-webflash.bin
write tl-wdr3600-webflash.bin linux &
reboot

keep in mind for your router there ware 2 versions US and any other..make sure to get the correct one for the flash..

Ill rather do reset, than update..via WEB interface...
than reboot and reset via button again (do not choose to reset after update option)
than log in, set pass and rebuild your settings..
this would be as safe as it can get...

P.S. well dale_gribble39 was faster than me posting... Rolling Eyes

Router/Version: Netgear R7800
File/Kernel: dd-wrt-webupgrade.bin (r52720) / Linux 4.9.337 #1941 SMP Sat May 27 02:53:53 +07 2023 armv7l
Previous/Reset: DD-WRT v3.0-r52242 std (05/23/23) / no
Mode/Status: Client/AP, 2.4ghz+5ghz, Lighttpd, Entware PHP8, MariaDB. USB storage, Samba, Wireguard. / Working
Issues/Errors: lighttpd crashes, although it does appear this is already been ticketed.

**EDIT** I did check the logs to try and work out why lighttpd was crashing, but I couldn't really see anything to enlighten me. It just stops working. It does start straight back up though when commanded to.

Have rolled back to r52242 again as this has been the most stable for me for a while.

GUI install over r42132 ...yeahuh, had to power off/on to get it to come up.
looked ok but its SAMBA share (r42132) was way before new ksmb stuff so I done a reset.
Radio is ok but this a pissyass thang to do any SAMBA shares with in newer bulds so NOT gonna mess with that.
Seems very good for a simple wifi router.
imma just put back to its normal switch place minus the old SAMBA share ...didn't need that anyways.
Can always turm on its radio when want to Twisted Evil

EDIT:
still tinkerin with this ol box
it worky pretty good BUT the channel survey is a lil bit way out there Rolling Eyes
Anyone else see this kinda mess ....yea, I PDF it Wink
