Does anyone know a bash script that runs the CURL command above every so often?
Afraid.org is still not on the dns-o-matic list and I don't think it's coming back so I need an alternative way to run those manual URLs for my domains.
I run a few Debian Linux terminals 24/7 so it wouldn't be a problem adding it in one of them, or perhaps a way to permanently add it right in DDWRT that will work even on reboot? I don't have JFFS enabled. I'm not skilled enough to know the best place to do it which is why I was using DNS-O-MATIC as my DDNS entry in DDWRT in the first place.
Not entirely sure but I would look into CRON to run commands on a schedule.
in DD-WRT you can save the command as Firewall and it will be executed every time router reboots.
It's kind of weird that they're stonewalling my emails asking them about this. I've sent a couple emails to DNS-O-MATIC over the years and they've always been quick to respond, but now they've stonewalled both emails about this subject that I've sent.
What's going on over there? Maybe it's time for me to delete my account with them.
Posted: Thu May 18, 2023 15:46 Post subject: Workaround for Dnsomatic dropping freedns.afraid.org
So, for anyone interested that this might help - I found a round about way of updating my freedns.afraid.org domains without the help of dnsomatic, but it requires an extra smartphone - if you have an extra android around that you aren't using you might be able to get this to work, but it needs to stay at home all the time connected to your wifi. I put an app on my phone called FTP Server Ultimate. I don't think it's on the Play Store anymore but you can probably find it at apkpure.com or some site that hosts older android apps. Install it on your phone and after telling it you want to install a dynamic dns server, you have to put your direct url link from afraid.org in the blank for Custom URL, instead of selecting a predefined service with
the dropdown. (the custom url blank is the next blank down under the dropdown). After inputting that with your afraid.org
info, there are several options, make sure you select "Update when connectivity changes (for example WiFi)". Then save settings and start server and you should be good. Strangely enough this app was written for an older version of android
but when I tried to install in on an older phone, even though all appeared to be working, the log showed nothing but errors
and the domains weren't updating. On my newer android running android 11, it worked. Your mileage may vary - might
just have been something configured wrong on my old phone. Thought i'd pass this along for anyone it might help.
Why not use another supported provider, there are plenty available for free
I like my domains with freedns.afraid.org and have been using them for years. Years and years.
I don't think there's a good reason why DNS-O-MATIC removed them from their supported list, and the fact that I didn't even get a reply to my email about it tells me something shady is going on over there.
I, and I bet others, would just like a little help for an alternative.
I think it's pretty simple to update the freedns.afraid.org domains automatically. Just go to your dd-wrt control panel -> Administration -> Commands -> Firewall -> Edit
If you have multiple domains to update, simply append another curl line with another xxx.
In this way once your router public ip changes or reboots, it will automatically update your domain's ip.
