I've grown too paranoid to keep running an all-in-one so I've decided to buy a separate modem, router, and WAP. I figured this would be the best place to ask about the router since I specifically want to put DD-WRT in it.
I need something with the best performance possible, since I plan to run all sorts of networking-heavy services (think tor/i2p routing) alongside video streaming and gaming. With that said my internet connection is only 100 megabits so I'm not sure if I could get away with something less powerful without sacrificing performance. My current router (a Netgear C7000v2) can handle all this traffic but only for a limited amount of time until it either cuts off my connection for 10-15 minutes (for god knows whatever reason) or flat out reboots itself (possible overheating).
I would also prefer six or eight ethernet ports instead of four but that may be too much to ask. I've been cross checking amazon finds against the compatibility database and haven't found a match yet. The Netgear R7500 is my current top pick and seems to be compatible (minus some complaints about the 5ghz wifi and the wifi LEDs not working but I plan to get a separate WAP anyways) but it's only a four port.
Even if you replace your ISP combination device, you'll want to have a cooling fan on the cable modem. Future proof would be using a compatible x86 mini PC, but you're still going to need a managed switch if you plan on doing VLANs in your LAN. The Netgear R9000/XR700 is an option, but VLANs are tricky to set up - and you'll still need a switch.

Hey thanks! Could you elaborate more on the VLAN situation? Do you mean like compartmentalizing connected devices into sub-networks or is it something else?
